I have checked the box “exclude image from sitemap” on several images, but they are still appearing in the attachment-sitemap.xml. What am I doing wrong?
To give you the full background: I have various PDF attachments that I want to include in the sitemap but I don’t want images to be included. So I have done all of the following (and “saved” each one):
– In Sitemap Settings/Attachments, I have turned ON “Include in Sitemap”.
– In Sitemap Settings/General, I have turned OFF “Images in Sitemaps”
– In each individual image, I have checked the box “exclude image from sitemap”

The option to exclude images from sitemap usually keeps them from being included in their referenced posts in sitemap:
To ensure they are not indexed, in which case they will be automatically excluded from sitemap, you can set them to noindex in Rank math metabox under Advanced Tab by editing the individual images in the media library.

Another way to exclude all your images from indexing would be to keep bots from crawling them by adding the following to your robots.txt
