I am building (with Divi) a heading on a page that uses the title and excerpt. This works great, except, when I have NO excerpt, it pulls the first content on the page it sees. I have tried changing the setting to use %excerpt_only%, but it does not seem to honor it as it still will pull the first content from the page it sees regardless if I have an excerpt defined or not.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.
You need to verify the settings in two places, in the page itself and make sure it’s set up as you wish and in the Titles & Meta > Pages settings as that is picked up when no meta description can be found on the specific page.
If you set the variable on both, the meta description should only be displayed if there’s an excerpt.
Hope this helps clarify your doubts.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.
I have set it up as you described. I have no excerpts on various pages yet it still pulls content from the page. It’s not honoring the setting. Using latest versions of Divi and RankMath. Ideas?

Hello,
I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?
Thank you.
Hello,
I tried adding excerpts through Divi and it seems the snippet only recognized the excerpts, leaving it empty the variable only leaves it blank as intended. Please refer to my video screencast in the Sensitive Data section.
We are looking forward to helping you.
You’ve misunderstood the issue. The title on the page is dynamic and pulls the title and excerpt (if exists). By using the %excerpt_only% value, and by NOT setting an excerpt, I expect that no excerpt will show. See the video linked as I show you what I mean. https://jmp.sh/dM6miB5
Hello,
You have in the meta description of that page the variable and since there’s no excerpt on the page that is missing from the source code, so the variable it’s working as expected.
Please note that these variables are intended to be used in the snippet editor, so could you please clarify exactly how you have the current setup for the titles? Are you using custom code, if so where can we find it?
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
To see how the titles are being generated, in the backend, go to Divi > Theme Builder > (Edit the ‘Custom Header’ within the ‘All Pages’ section), Edit the Fullwidth Header, and under Subtitle I have chosen to use the dynamic content of ‘Post Excerpt’. The expected behavior is that since I have %excerpt_only% in the RankMath settings for Pages, that if there is no excerpt set on a particular page, that no excerpt will populate that subtitle. However, it is pulling the first content it sees on the page if there is no excerpt.
Hello,
I tried to login into your website’s admin area to check this further, but it seems like the login link is already expired.
Please extend the expiry of the login link so that we can further investigate.
Thank you.
I have extended your login credentials. Please try again. Thank you.
Hello,
The issue here is not related to Rank Math, rather it is related to Divi.
Under the Titles & Meta settings, the %excerpt_only% variable that you’ve used affects the meta description of the page (in the source code), not the description on the frontend.
All the Titles & Meta settings are related to SEO, and not with the front end of the website.
I checked the theme builder under Divi and for the subtitle, you’ve set the Post Excerpt, which is working fine and is a feature of Divi.
Using the Health Check troubleshooting plugin, I disabled Rank Math and the excerpt was still picked. You can have a look at the screencast in the sensitive data section of this ticket.
However, you can get in touch with Divi support to see if there can provide excerpt only variable for the subtitle.
Hope that helps.
Thank you.
Thank you for your help! I understand and agree, this must be addressed by the theme developer. I will reach out to them as you suggest.
