  • Hello,

I apologize for the issue you are facing with the duplicate sitemaps generated by Rank Math. This can indeed impact your SEO performance. To address this problem, you can follow these steps:

    1. Check for Plugin or Theme Conflict:

      • Use the Health Check plugin to identify any conflicts caused by other plugins or themes that might be generating these duplicate sitemaps.
    2. Flush Sitemaps Cache:

      • If there is data in the source code of the sitemap page, try flushing the sitemaps cache and excluding it from caching to resolve the issue.
    3. Remove Static Files:

      • If there are static files with the same name as your sitemap file (page-sitemap.xml), FTP into your server and remove any conflicting files.

Please try these steps to address the duplicate sitemap issue. If the problem persists, feel free to reply here, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

This is absolutely normal because Rank Math automatically creates another sub-sitemap for your posts/pages if the count already exceeds the limit. This happens due to the Links Per Sitemap option we have in Rank Math > Sitemap Settings > General:

Please note that Google crawls small-sized sitemaps faster. With this in mind, Rank math uses the links per sitemap limit to break down sitemaps into smaller parts and you’ll not be penalized for this. You can also check Google’s guidelines for sitemaps: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/sitemaps/build-sitemap

Hope that helps and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.

I dont think you’re understanding the situation fully:

If the sitemaps are paginated (which is OK based on your explanation), then why is the full sitemap still exist and is being picked up by Google and AHREFS.com as a duplicate sitemap?

    Hello,

Ahrefs should not crawl the /page-sitemap.xml since it’s not included in your sitemap index even if it is opening fine.

Also, you should include your sitemap URL in your robots.txt so crawlers use your sitemap index instead.

You can follow our guide here to edit your robots.txt and see our recommended rules:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/how-to-edit-robots-txt-with-rank-math/#default-rules

In your Google Search Console, you should also submit your sitemap index only and remove any other sitemaps:

    Looking forward to helping you.
