Edit Snippet tries to overwrite permalink foreign characters (öäõü)

    Hello.
I switched over form Yoast and used the convenient import feature.

It used to do it before but now with RankMath snippet preview doesn’t display the foreign characters.

Snippet preview displays foreign characters in categories/sub-categories but not in product name.
When selecting Edit Snippet and clicking unique URL field it changes also the permalink on top of the page.
Would that be a problem if permalink displays foreign characters in product name but not in the snippet preview?

For displaying foreign characters in product name I am using the following plug-in: https://wordpress.org/plugins/allow-accents-and-special-characters-in-permalinks/

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Could you please inspect the affected product page and check if the issue can be reproduced on the page source when viewing the canonical link?

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    Hello Vei,

We have replied to the same query via email but here is the reply once again:

Thanks a lot for your query and we are so sorry about the trouble this must have caused.

By default, WP removes the accents and special characters from the URL but the allow-accents plugin prevents WP from removing it.

However, we have raised an issue for this internally and we will have an update with a fix very soon.

We appreciate your patience in this matter.

    Thank you.

    Hi Michael

    Thank you for responding.

My apologies, I might have explained it a bit unclear (or rather left out some of the explanation why I need öäüõ characters)

The website I am working on is going to be an upgrade of the current live website which is built in OpenCart.
The current site displays URL like that:
    http://www.veimex.ee/koduõmblustehnika/õmblusmasinad/õmblusmasin-janome-juno-e-1015

New web will be in WordPress/WooCommerce and since the SERP position is very good right now I don’t want to risk losing it and want to have the URL displayed same way as it displays now.

In product admin page under RankMath SEO tab it displays product in URL preview “…/omblusmasin-janome-juno-e-1015″ but permalink shows
    “…/õmblusmasin-…” as I need.
Canonical link in RankMath SEO Advanced tab displays it also “/omblusmasin-..”

    So to express it shortly:
    – permalink displays letter “õ” as needed (with the help of a plugin)
    – RankMath snippet preview displays link with letter “o”
    – RankMath forces canonical link with letter “o”
    – URL works only with letter “õ” in product name

Since RankMath seems not to take snippet preview URL from permalink but bypasses the plugin which is used to force display foreign characters in permalink my question is:
will it mess up my SERP position if there is such a difference?

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the follow up.

Yes this may have an impact but you can also workaround this by using the Rank Math redirection module to redirect the affected URLs to the new URLs without accents.

We are currently investigating this and we will have an update soon. Thank you.

    Hello,

Upon testing further, the plugin is not working with the latest version of WordPress since it has not been updated for over a year now. Here’s a screencast:

Please ask the plugin developer to fix the issue.

This is not coming from the Rank Math plugin.

    Thank you.
