Duplicate, submitted URL not selected as canonical

    Dear Team,

Google is marking most of my translated pages as ‘Duplicate, submitted URL not selected as canonical’. Over 370 submitted pages are affected by the issue. But when I inspect the pages, I see no issues.

I had raised a ticket two months back, and was advised to wait for Google to crawl. Now Google has crawled many times, but still displaying same error.

I have spent huge amount of money on manual translations. But since pages are not displaying, the efforts and investment has been useless so far. Kindly help solve the issue.

  • Hello,

Thank you for getting in touch with us.

Please check the last crawl date on those errors you are seeing. If they are quite old, then you just need to give Google some time to re-crawl your content and see the updated tags.

With that said, please share a few example URLs with this issue so we can investigate if there is any issue on your website or if it is just an issue of Google not seeing your latest page content.

    Dear Team,

    Waiting for response please!

    Hello,

You are seeing this because your actual URL is ?lang=ar/ but the canonical is set as ?lang=ar. So, the slash is missing.

Please make changes to your multi lingual plugin slug settings so that there is no slash in the canonical. Or if you would rather have Rank Math add a slash to all canonical URLs, please let us know and we can share the filter with you.

    Thank you.

    Dear Uzair Bhai,

Thanks so much for delving into the issue and finding the reason.
Will really appreciate if you can make the changes for me. Please do for all the languages.

    Dear Uzair,

Please let me know if you have made the change in the url. I couldn’t really understand where the changed was to be made, so requested you to do it.

    Hello,

We tried to login to your website but the password is not working.

Could you please update the logins?

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

We investigated this issue and there is nothing wrong. The error you are seeing on Google is correct but it is okay.

On your website, the usual URLs are without the slash. I am not sure why Google is seeing the URLs with the slash but since they have a canonical without the slash, it is normal for Google to notify you of the same.

To fix this issue, you should consider only using the non-slash version of your translated pages and redirect the slash ones to the non-slash ones to avoid any errors in the Google Search Console.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you Uzair,

I will follow your instructions of using only non-slash version of url (although not sure why wordpress/wpml is picking different types of slashes).

Hope this helps resolve errors from my console.
