    I’ve been redesigning my site and updating everything during this quiet period. I have a problem as a portrait painter as there is another Terence McKenna all over the net. He’s dead but pictures of him dominate any search for Terence McKenna portraits etc and they are very off putting from my point of view. However, a search for ‘McKenna portraits’ brings up my stuff. I can’t change my name but would changing my domain name to ‘McKenna Portraits’ help? Is it unwise to do this? Although I’ve had the site for some time there is hardly any traffic on it at the moment but I am about to embark on a major publicity push so need to get things right. This may be outside of your brief but any suggestions would be welcome.

    I searched Terence McKenna Portraits and your site is showing up first.

    To rank your images on Google you will need to optimize your images. One way of doing this is adding an alt text to your image which contain the keyword or the post title. Currently your images seem to have no alt or title tags. Please note that for your content to Rank first Google considers more factors than just optimization of the page.

    Here are some of the considered factors:

    1. Your website’s authority on the search keyword

    2. Your content’s quality and how better it is than the other article currently ranking.

    3. How competitive the keyword is.

    4. How many backlinks you have and if they are better than what the other guys ranking for that keyword have.

    5. Your website’s crawlability.

    6. Frequency of new content and content updates.

    7. So much more that there is a dedicated blog post on it by Brian Dean 🙂

    I would recommend that you keep at it and work on acquiring more links to break into the top SERPs.

    Thanks for such a detailed reply, Michael.
    In fact, I removed the alt image tags because they show up in the Divi lightbox and on hover which is something I don’t want for reasons of aesthetics. There doesn’t seem to be a way round this so I may have to live with it if I want to get my images to rank higher.
    I’m also starting an in-depth blog on the subject of portraits so this may well help to lift the profile.
