Category URLs returning 404 despite being correctly configured

Hello, I am experiencing an issue with my category URLs returning 404 errors even though they are correctly set up. The issue is as follows:

1️⃣ Some category pages return a 404 error even though they were working fine before.
2️⃣ The category slugs and permalinks are correct, and they match the existing posts under each category.
3️⃣ I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

Resaving Permalinks under Settings → Permalinks
Clearing server cache & Cloudflare cache
Checking Rank Math category settings (ensuring indexing is enabled)
Disabling other plugins to check for conflicts
Ensuring no issues with rewrite rules on the server
🔹 Despite these steps, certain categories still return 404 errors, while others work fine.
🔹 I use the “sameAs” attribute in JSON-LD Schema for my category pages, pointing to their own URLs. Could this be affecting how Rank Math handles categories?
🔹 Are there any known issues with Rank Math that could cause specific categories to stop resolving properly?

Could you please advise on what might be causing this issue and how to resolve it?
If you need further details, I can provide screenshots or specific logs.

    Thank you for your support!

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with your category URLs returning 404 errors. Thank you for providing detailed information about the troubleshooting steps you’ve already taken.

Here are a few additional suggestions that might help resolve the issue:

    1. Check Web Server Settings: Ensure that your web server is configured correctly to return the appropriate status codes. Sometimes, misconfigurations can lead to 404 errors even when everything seems set up correctly. You may want to contact your web hosting provider to verify this.

    2. Review .htaccess File: If you are using an Apache server, check your .htaccess file for any rules that might be affecting the category URLs. Sometimes, custom rules can inadvertently block access to certain pages.

    3. Inspect for Redirects: Use tools like Redirect Checker to see if there are any unexpected redirects happening with your category URLs.

    4. Check for Conflicting Plugins: Although you’ve disabled other plugins, ensure that there are no caching or security plugins that might be interfering with URL resolution.

    5. Review JSON-LD Schema: While the "sameAs" attribute in JSON-LD Schema should not typically cause issues, it’s worth temporarily removing it to see if it has any effect on the 404 errors.

    6. 404 Monitor: Check the 404 Monitor in Rank Math to see if there are any specific logs related to the category URLs that are returning 404 errors. This might provide insight into what is happening.

If these suggestions do not resolve the issue, please reply to this ticket with your site URL and any relevant screenshots or logs, and a human agent from our support team will assist you further.

Thank you for your patience, and we look forward to helping you resolve this issue!

🛠 2. Steps Taken to Resolve the Issue
✅ 1) Checked Rank Math Settings & Adjustments
✔ Disabled Noindex setting for the affected categories and saved changes.
✔ Checked category redirections in Rank Math – no conflicting redirects found.
✔ Reviewed Rank Math’s auto-generated schema & metadata for these categories.

✅ 2) Flushed Permalinks in WordPress
✔ Navigated to WordPress → Settings → Permalinks → Clicked “Save Changes” (without modifying settings).
✔ Tested the affected category pages again – 404 error persisted.

✅ 3) Reviewed .htaccess File for Conflicts
✔ Checked .htaccess file for any rewrite rules affecting categories – no category-specific redirects found.
✔ Default WordPress Rewrite Rules are intact.
✔ Breeze Cache & Rank Math-related rewrite rules were added.
✔ No explicit rules blocking or altering category URLs.

📌 Test not yet performed: Reverting .htaccess to its default state and testing again.

✅ 4) Cleared Cache & Server Cache Reset
    ✔ Cleared Cloudways Varnish cache.
✔ Deleted Breeze Cache plugin cache.
✔ Cleared browser cache and tested again.
✔ Issue persists (category pages still return 404 errors).

✅ 5) Verified Category Data in WordPress Database
✔ Checked wp_terms table – affected categories exist with valid slugs.
✔ Checked wp_term_taxonomy table – Parent ID and count fields are correctly populated.
✔ No signs of corruption or missing category data.
✔ Category count is nonzero, meaning WordPress recognizes that posts exist within these categories.

✅ 6) Checked Rank Math 404 Monitor for Logs
✔ Rank Math 404 Monitor logs show the affected category URLs as 404.
✔ No auto-redirects or forced URL changes recorded.

    🚀 3. Current Conclusion
📌 All standard troubleshooting steps have failed, suggesting a possible conflict with Rank Math or another SEO setting.
📌 The database confirms that the categories exist and are not corrupted.
📌 The .htaccess file may still be a factor, but before resetting it, I want to verify with Rank Math support.
