    Hi all,

When I select include categories in sitemap, it generates a 404 (the sitemap link created does not exist). I have several post categories. I also checked the sitemap index and the categories sitemap is not included in there.

    Please can you advise?

    Thank you.

    Michael.

  • Hi Michael,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math.

Since you mentioned that categories are set to noindex, you will need to ensure that you have a few categories set to index so that this can appear on your sitemap.

Next, you will need to do the following:

    1. Head over to WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks

    Hit the save button once.

    2. Go to WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > Sitemap Settings

    Hit the save button once.

    That should fix the issue.

If it doesn’t, please do let us know so we can look at this further.

    Hi Michael,

I have the categories set to Index within Posts\Categories. I saved the permalinks and sitemap as suggested, but the sitemap still shows as a 404

    Hello,

We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-security-audit-log/

We really look forward to helping you.

Thanks Michael. I’ll do that now.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the reply.

It looks like your security firewall is blocking outside access.
I’ve shared my IP on the sensitive data section, please whitelist it so that I can be able to login and poke around.

We are looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

Sorry Michael, I’ve whitelisted the IP now.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the follow up.

I will have to check this with our dev team but setting the global noindex seems to affect the creation of the sitemap even if some categories are set to index.

For this time, since you don’t have many categories I’ve set the global index option and then you can set noindex to each of the categories that you don’t want to include on the sitemap.

    I hope this info helps.

    Hi Michael,

I see. OK good, so it’s not me being dense then. The index on the category was being over-ridden. Thanks for looking at it for me. I’m having a look in the plugin settings now but can’t seem to remember where the global index option for categories is? Please could you remind me?

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the reply.

You can find the global options under Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Categories

I hope this info helps. Thank you.

Thanks Michael, I didn’t see them because Default was selected and had hidden the options….

    Hi there,

I am glad that you have now been able to work this out 🙂

Feel free to contact us for any additional questions.
