Please check if the article is indexed on Google or not. If it is not indexed, this might be a reason why the category page is ranking as all the pages within the category have duplicate content on the category page.
If the article is already indexed, the only way to prevent the categories from ranking is by setting them to noindex.

If the category pages or the homepage are showing on the top of the SERP instead of the intended article posts, then it is possible that Google thinks that your category pages or the homepage are more optimized for a certain keyword.
You would need to change your SEO strategy if that’s the case.

Please go to the WordPress dashboard > Rank Math > Titles and meta, Turn on “Category Robots Meta”, set it no ‘noindex’ and click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page. Screenshot:
