However, Rank Math automatically adds a self-referencing canonical URL to your posts/pages if they are set to index.

Based on your reply, I have another question.
Right now my site is on a temporary URL before going live. I have it set to no index in the wp settings.
If I’m understanding you correctly, that would keep RM from setting the canonical URL.
When the site is ready to go live, I will remove the “no index” from wp. At that point, will the automatic canonical URL work?

As long as your page is set to index then the self-referencing canonical URL will be automatically generated by the Rank Math. You can also check the page source to confirm if the canonical link is correct or not.
A self-refrencing URL will look something like this:
<link rel="canonical" href="https://domain.com/page-name" />
