Canonical URL not updating after changes

#1102663
  • I’m using Rank Math on my site and noticed an issue. Even after updating the canonical URL in the settings, search engines still seem to pick up the old one. Cache is cleared and sitemap is refreshed, but the canonical tag on my page source doesn’t reflect the new setting.

Has anyone else faced this, or is there a step I might be missing?

  • Hello,

I apologize for the issue you are facing with the canonical URL not updating. It can be frustrating when changes don’t reflect as expected. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Check the Canonical URL Setting: Ensure that you have correctly updated the canonical URL in the Rank Math meta box under the SEO tab for the specific post or page. If you cannot find the Advanced tab, please enable the Advanced Mode from your WordPress Dashboard.

    2. Clear Caches: Since you’ve mentioned clearing the cache, ensure that you clear any server-side cache as well, if applicable. This includes caching plugins and server-level caching (like Varnish).

    3. Check for Plugin Conflicts: Sometimes, other plugins may interfere with Rank Math’s functionality. You can use the Health Check plugin to check for conflicts.

    4. Inspect the Page Source: After making changes and clearing caches, inspect the page source again to see if the canonical tag reflects the new URL. If it still shows the old one, there might be a caching issue somewhere.

    5. Use Instant Indexing: If you want to expedite the process of getting Google to recognize the new canonical URL, consider using Rank Math’s Instant Indexing feature. Ensure you have enabled the Instant Indexing module in Rank Math, then submit your page for indexing.
