Canonical URL issue when using permalink as Korean - Support

hello.

I’m running a Korean website and I’m using permalinks written in Korean.

The URL in Korean is automatically encoded as follows.

From
https://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/워드프레스

To
https://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/%EC%9B%8C%EB%93%9C%ED%94%84%EB%A0%88%EC%8A%A4

However, the canonical URLs that RankMath automatically assigns are only encoded in the lowercase.

So, there is a difference between the actual encoded URL and the canonical URL in uppercase and lowercase letters.

I noticed this issue when I tagged it with Hreflang.

From what I understand, uppercase and lowercase URLs are different in SEO, so is it okay for me to leave this issue alone?

Or is there any way to change the canonical URL to lowercase?

Google should have no issues when determining URLs if they have different cases. However, to ensure that your canonical is really having some issues, you need to check some Coverage issues in your Google Search Console. You may refer to this guide: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7440203?hl=en

Korean uses the format “%XX%XX%XX”, where only the canonicals automatically generated by RankMath are lowercase.

Hello,

Thank you for your patience.

The lowercase URL in your canonical URLs should still be readable by browsers where the result is the same as the uppercase.

You can also refer to the percent-encoding section at this link:
https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc3986#section-2.1

However, to ensure that you’re getting canonical issues with those, you may visit your GSC coverage section as my colleague mentioned above.

Alternatively, you may use and customize this filter to change the canonical URL from lowercase to uppercase:
```
add_filter( 'rank_math/frontend/canonical', function( $canonical ) {
	$link = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];
	$canonical = home_url(strtoupper($link));
	return $canonical;
});
```
