Canonical Tag Issue on Paginated Category Pages with Rank Math

I’m experiencing an issue with canonical tags on paginated category pages. Despite setting a canonical for paginated pages to point to the main category URL, Rank Math automatically sets the tag as index, follow instead of noindex, follow. This causes the paginated pages to index, creating duplicate content issues. I’ve tried using custom code in functions.php, but the settings seem to override Rank Math’s defaults. How can I ensure paginated pages show the correct canonical with noindex, follow? Please solve my problem.

I removed all my custom codes now, and believe to set and solve all things to stay with rank math now?

Please check the screenshot — you don’t need to enable both options simultaneously. It’s now set up perfectly, so feel free to review it yourself. Let me know how you applied the canonical filter, as I’d like to understand it for future use on other sites without assistance.

Also, could you ensure the pagination page displays the same description as the main category page? Thanks!

    Hello,

The meta description from the paginated pages will mimic the one from the main category page and you can check the same by going to a paginated page and inspecting the source code to see the same meta description.

Also, please note that the data inside the sensitive data section is only visible to our team and yourself, so if you are trying to showcase a screenshot to some other member, you would need to post a screenshot on the actual reply.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

Currently, the page source code correctly displays noindex, follow, which is the key factor for Google. When using the SEO extension, it initially shows index, follow, but after a refresh, it correctly reads as noindex, follow. This behavior suggests that the page’s HTML already has the proper noindex, follow directive, which is what Googlebot will use to interpret the page.

    Hello,

Yes, that is correct. That is the behavior you mentioned you would like to have so if you have any additional questions about it just let us know or we can close the ticket for now.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

I’d like the same description that appears under the heading on the main category page to also show on the pagination pages. Currently, the short description is not displaying there.

    Hello,

That is controlled by your theme and not by our plugin, since it’s part of the template being used.

You would need to discuss this further with your theme provider.

    Thank you.
