Canonical Issue

    Hi,

Yesterday, I changed my WP URL post settings to include the category.

Now, Search Console is giving me duplicate content warnings and saying that they have selected the previous versions of the URLs without categories.

Doesn’t Rank Math automatically self-reference once you’ve changed the URL structure?

    Cheers,
    Dan

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with duplicate content warnings in Google Search Console. When you change your URL structure to include categories, Rank Math does typically set the current post/page URL as the canonical URL by default. However, if you are seeing warnings about duplicate content, it may be necessary to manually set the canonical URLs for the affected posts or pages.

You can do this by following these steps:

    1. Edit the post or page in question.
    2. Scroll down to the Rank Math meta box under the SEO tab.
    3. Look for the Advanced Settings section where you will find the Canonical URL field.
    4. Here, you can specify the correct canonical URL that you want Google to recognize as the primary version.

If you cannot find the Advanced tab, please ensure that you have enabled Advanced Mode in Rank Math settings.

    Enter the canonical URL

Once you’ve updated the canonical URLs, save or update your posts, and Google will re-index them accordingly.

If you continue to experience issues, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further.

Thank you for raising this concern!

    Thanks for the reply.

It seems to be all of the blog pages, which makes sense as they all now have a category in the URL.

    Hello,

The URLs you shared already have self-referencing canonical URLs in their source code.

Please clear your website’s cache and revalidate the issue in your Google Search Console account and give Google some time to recrawl your site.

    Looking forward to helping you.

I did this but I’m still left with 4 pages that aren’t indexed.

Here is an example of one of those pages. What could be left to do if Google doesn’t like the way it’s self-referencing?

    Hello,

The page was last crawled on Nov 6, 2024, 3:07:50 PM.

Please submit the pages in the URL Inspection tool and request the re-indexing of those pages in the Google Search Console

We hope this helps. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you require any further assistance.
