Cannot connect to Google Search Console – Both methods fail

    Rank Math free

    Hello Rankmath.
I have a Google Search Console account that comes with a pre-verified domain property, since I purchased the domain itself at Google Domains.

I am trying to connect my website:
    https://travelregrets.com/

… to Google Search Console. I tried both methods shown here:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/google-site-verification/
    … and they both fail.

    1) Domain route:
I connect to google and when the popup asking to grant access to your plugin pops up, I check all checkboxes. After that in my wordpress admin Google Analytics “Analytics” view prepopulates with my correct account info, but “Search Console” does not, no matter how many times I try, it’s like it’s not connected at all

    2) URL Prefix route
I tried this route as well, copied over the HTML tag from Google Search Console, pasted it in the “Webmaster Tools”->”Google Search Console” field, hit “Save Changes” button, but I land on a white page with the following content:

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at w********@t**************** to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Please help me resolve either way. Thank you!

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

If you connect your website via the General settings, you won’t need to go through the HTML verification:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/google-site-verification/#num-2-how-to-automatically-verify-your-website-in-google-search-console

Please also make sure that you are not connecting to Google Search Console via a domain property but rather a URL prefix and that you have verified the correct version of your website on the Google Search Console (HTTP or HTTPS, www or non-www).

The URL-prefix property also helps keep your sitemap in sync with Google Search Console as we submit it automatically for you.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.

Hi Reinelle. I can confirm that:
    1) I have verified the correct version of my website on the Google Search Console, not only as a Domain Property, but also as a URL prefix (HTTPS, non-www)
    2) I’m trying to connect Rank Math via General Settings.

… still only analytics section pre-populates. The Search console section never populates with my website information.
Every time I try clicking “Reconnect” the following checkboxes seem unchecked:
    * Edit Google Analytics management entities. Learn more
    * See and download your Google Analytics data. Learn more
    * View and manage Search Console data for your verified sites. Learn more
    * Manage the list of sites and domains you control. Learn more
… but even if I check them all and continue, the Search console section still does not populate, and if I reconnect checkboxes still look unchecked.
How can I proceed to fix this?

Also… this is the reason why I tried to explore the URL Prefix route + HTML tag.
Can you also try to provide a solution for that “Internal Server Error”?

    Hello,

For the Internal error, could you please share the error log when the issue happened so we can determine the root cause of the issue? Having an error log will help us determine what is the root cause of the error.

You can follow this guide to enable debugging in WordPress
https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/ or you can get in touch with your web host, and they will help you locate the log file.

Once done, please share here the report related to Rank Math so we can check.

Regarding the connection, please ensure that you’re using the latest version of Rank Math and reconnect your website to your Analytics, but this time, try using the Google Chrome browser.

If the settings are not getting saved, please try using Google Chrome or another chromium-based browser the next time you need to save those settings. We have seen this in the past happening when people were using Safari on macOS or the Firefox browser, so if you are using any of these combinations.

Let us know how this goes.

    Thank you.

Hi Reinelle. Regarding he Internal error, this is the error log I got:

[01-Feb-2023 17:28:31 UTC] PHP Notice: Function ActionScheduler_Action::$args was called incorrectly. ActionScheduler_Action::$args too long. To ensure the args column can be indexed, action args should not be more than 191 characters when encoded as JSON. Support for strings longer than this will be removed in a future version. Please see Debugging in WordPress for more information. (This message was added in version 2.1.0.) in /home/dh_pd6dir/travelregrets.com/wp-includes/functions.php on line 5835

I actually think I found the cause of this, but it would be great if you can confirm.
    The instructions under:
General Settings -> Webmaster Tools -> Google Search Console
say “Enter your Google Search Console verification HTML code or ID.”.

I have been trying to paste in the entire verification HTML code as it’s exported from Google Search Console (the entire html tag), and that’s what results in the error.
But if I extract the ID of the html tag and paste that portion only, that seems to save and persist.

Could this be the case? If that is the case, I highly suggest you provide better instructions that that’s what you expect in that field.

Also, can you explain me what features I am expected to see activated, now that Google Search Console is connected? (I am not sure what features/dashboards this is supposed to enable).

    Thanks!
    Matteo

    Hello,

    Thank you for your patience.

The log you have shared seems not related to Rank Math.

Also, if you’re referring to this whole HTML code, then Rank Math will remove them automatically and retain the actual code inside:

    <meta name="google-site-verification" content="your-id" />

Could you please check your site’s configuration if there are some PHP values that are too low and which you should increase? Please get in touch with your web host and ask them to set the following values:

    PHP Memory Limit: 512M
    Max input time: 150
    PHP time limit: 120
    PHP max input variables: 1000

Regarding the Google Search Console, all of the data are present in Rank Math > Analytics, so you need to set the Analytics module in Rank Math > Dashboard. You can also refer to our guide here to see the features available once you have connected your site to your Google account:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/analytics/

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.
