We do not control the paginated page’s behavior. However, what we can do is to set noindex to all your paginated pages, so that they never get indexed by search engines.

Just to double check, if this setting is enabled are the main category page urls still indexable?

Yes, the main/first page is still set to index.
That feature only applies to pagination like /page/2/, /page/3/, and so on.
