Auto Post Redirect work oppositely?

    Hi Team,

I just updated a post/article on my website and updated the URL as well. Looks like my old URL has been redirected to the new one (I am happy with it). However, my redirection settings say “AUTO POST REDIRECTION” as OFF. When I turn it ON, the redirection stops working.

Is it the expected behavior? I thought to redirect would work only if this button(AUTO POST REDIRECTION) is ON but its working when it is OFF.

    Hello,

Thanks for contacting us and we regret the inconvenience caused.

It seems to be working fine on my end. Please see this screencast for a quick reference: https://i.rankmath.com/AXix4N

Could you please check if there are multiple redirections created for the same URL? Also please try clearing your website’s cache and see if that fixes the issue.

Please let us know how that goes.

    Thanks.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

Thank you for keeping in touch with us.

We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

We really look forward to helping you.

    Hey Jeremy,

I have provided you the request info in sensitive data. Please check and confirm the issue

    Hello,

    Thanks for your reply.

I logged into your website and I was able to replicate the issue.

However, as you’ve mentioned, you have not created any redirections for the post.

Using the Health Check plugin, I tested by disabling all the plugins and activating a default theme and the redirection was still there. Please see the screencast available in the sensitive data section of this ticket.

I suggest you create a redirection for the post and see if the issue still persists.

Please let us know how that goes.

    Thanks.

    Thanks, Prabhat.

Looks like there is some confusion. Please try to explain to me how does the Auto Post Redirect work? In the attached screen record I have covered 2 scenarios.

1 – A post with Link1 was created with Auto Post Redirect “ON”. Then the link was changed to Link2. Now when we try to hit Link1, it always redirects to Link2 (even if we turn the Auto Link Redirect OFF). Also, now there is an entry in the redirect screen.

2 – A post with Link11 was created with the Auto Post Redirect as Off. Then the link was changed to Link22. Now when we try to hit the Link11, it redirects to Link22, however, when we turn ON the Auto Post Redirect and try to hit Link11, it says page not available.

Now, can you please explain what is the difference between the situations where we change the URL (with the Auto Post Redirect ON) and it always redirects to the latest URL, and where we change the URL (with auto post URL OFF), and it only redirects to the latest URL if we keep the Auto Post URL as OFF(and dont redirects it if we turn the Auto Post Redirect ON).

I hope I am able to explain my question.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

The auto post Redirection is used to redirect posts automatically when you change the permalink slug in the WP sidebar panel or in the Rank Math meta box under the general tab.https://rankmath.com/kb/general-settings/#auto-post-redirect

Just as you have done in your screencast, with the auto-post redirect on there is the ability for Rank Math to create a new Redirection rule when you change the post slug as you can see it in the Redirection list.

With the option set to off then there is no redirection entry created which is not ideal. This answers the reason why you get a page not found in your to link 11 after you changed it to link22.

Previously the link 1 did not return the page not found error because there already existed a redirection rule under the redirections list.

Therefore the main purpose of this option is to create a redirection rule of the previously changed slug URL so there are no 404 errors generated on your links for instance if you had previously linked it elsewhere.

Hope this clarifies your doubts here. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I got your point that there was no entry because the option was set to off, however, the redirection was created and Link11 was getting redirected to Link22. It only stopped working when I turn the option ON. This is weird.

    Hello,

Thank you for getting back to us.

The redirection created for link 11 to link 22, when the auto-post redirection feature is off was from WordPress.

Turning it back on it uses the redirection feature from Rank Math and if there is no redirection rule created in the redirect list, then it will cause a 404-page error.

This functionality only extends the capability of WordPress by creating a redirection rule within the plugin.

Hope this is clear. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

That makes sense. Please mark this thread as solved. Thanks much.
