Author page re-directs

    Hi,

Is there an issue with indexing on Google if I create a different author page from the one created automatically and re-direct the default page link to the one I create.

I’ve done this before and Google did not index the new page but immediately indexed the default page.

Is there a way round this as the author page URL I currently have contains my email addressed bases on my wordpress username which I can’t change. I would obviously like to change this so as not to give out my email address on the author page but if it means the new page then not getting indexed on Google I would then have to leave it.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

    Best regards
    Graeme

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with your author page and its indexing on Google. When you create a new author page and redirect the default one to it, there are a few factors to consider that can affect indexing:

    1. 301 Redirect: Ensure that you are using a 301 redirect from the default author page to your new author page. This tells search engines that the content has permanently moved to a new location, which can help in transferring any existing link equity.

      Create new redirection

    2. Canonical Tags: If you have duplicate content issues, consider adding a canonical tag on the new author page pointing to itself. This helps Google understand which version of the page should be indexed.

    3. Sitemap Submission: Make sure that your new author page is included in your sitemap. Rank Math automatically generates a sitemap for you, which can be found at https://yourdomainname/sitemap_index.xml. Submitting this sitemap to Google Search Console can help Google discover your new page more quickly.

    4. Internal Linking: Ensure that there are internal links pointing to your new author page from other relevant pages on your site. This can help Google find and index the new page more effectively.

    5. Google Search Console: Check for any manual actions or indexing issues in your Google Search Console account. If there are any messages regarding indexing, it may provide insight into why your new author page is not being indexed.

If you continue to experience issues with indexing, please reply to this ticket with your site URL so we can assist you further. Thank you for raising this concern, and we hope this information helps you resolve the issue!

    Thanks for this and understood.

When I did this before though on another site and on which I also use Rankmath the re-directed author page wasn’t added as a default to the sitemap that Rankmath created.

All the author schema was then also not attributed to the new author page but only the default one.

This is what making we wary of changing the default author page as obviously if Google doesn’t know who is authoring the content it won’t rank.

Thanks for your continued help with this.

    Best regards
    Graeme

    Hello,

    Thank you for your patience.

Yes, since the new page you created is not the default author page, Rank Math’s automatic schema is not applied to it.

In this case, you may need to apply the schema manually using a filter:

Alternatively, with Rank Math PRO, you can just import the schema from your author URL to the new page’s schema with a few clicks (before applying the redirect):

    Looking forward to helping you.
