Aggregate Rating on Product Category Pages

    Hello,

    I’m currently using Woocommerce.
I have a question in regards to the stars rating rich snippets Google usually shows for product category pages.
I know that Rank math automatically turns woocommerce reviews into schema-ready content for single product pages, giving Google a clear average rating value and a specific review count to show on serps.

But what happens when a category page contains multiple products with multiple reviews, hence, multiple average rating values for each product, since there’s no specific item to extract info from?

What rating value should I expect Google to show on SERPs, if any?
Would Google recognize the average rating value and figure out the aggregate rating info nonetheless?

    Thanks,
    Denis

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

It seems that you’re using the product schema for your product category pages.

Google recommends disabling the schema to your product category page and the product Schema is only for the actual product and not for anything else. You can check this link for more information:
    https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/product#guidelines

To do that, please head over to Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Product: Categories and enable the “Remove Snippet Data”:
    Product Category schema

Please also note that some options are only available when you enable the Advanced Mode in Rank Math. If it’s not showing, you must have chosen to use the Easy Mode. Please follow the steps in this link to switch to Advanced Mode:

    I hope that helps.

Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance with anything else.

    Hi Reinelle,
Thanks for the answer. I’m already using the Rank Math advanced mode.

The reason I’m concerned about category pages is that they are all well ranked for me on SERPs, so I’m wondering if there’s the chance to show the aggregate rating review snippet along the search results.

If i disabled schema for such pages, as you suggest, how would my results appear on the serp? Would Google (and Rank Math) still be able to recognize the aggregate rating and show the proper star rating snippet, based on the actual reviews I’m getting in Woocommerce?

I know for a fact that many competitors of mine are using single product schema for their category pages, in order to show the star rating rich snippet based on the aggregate rating average value an total review count extracted from actual reviews on their category pages.

    Thank you!

    Hello,

The guidelines from Google are very precise and mention that you shouldn’t use the Product Schema on those aggregator pages unless those pages have a single product.

If you don’t want to follow those guidelines and show the rating stars on those pages you would need to manually add it to those pages with the help of the Schema Generator and possibly have to edit it further with this filter: https://rankmath.com/kb/filters-hooks-api-developer/#extend-json-ld-data

Please note that not following the guidelines might get you a manual penalty down the line and lose all the work done.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

    Hi Miguel,
I’ll follow your advice then and disable the Snippet on category pages.

    Thanks for the help!
