Advice with “Coverage” on Google Search Console

    Hello,

    I hope you’re doing well.
I’d like to ask you for help with the “Coverage” within the Google Search Console. Particularly, how to resolve the issues that appear. I tried to do it by myself but I did not manage to resolve anything so if you could give me advice, it would be great.

There appear 3 errors on my website, which I’ll describe in more detail for a better understanding.

    1.) Submitted URL marked “noindex”
How do I please remove these pages from indexing or prevent Google from indexing them? There appear pages that I ticked “no index” on purpose so I’m not sure how to tell Google to remove it from here. Then, there appear links that are images but I’m not sure how to remove them either.

    2.) Redirect error
There are several redirect errors that are working URLs with added /?amp=1 which I do not why appear.

3.) Submitted URL not found (404)
No examples were found, I don’t know why it appears actually.

Thank you very much for your advice.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

    Submitted URL marked “noindex”

Ideally, noindex pages should not be included in the sitemap. Can you please follow these steps?

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

If the noindex URLs are excluded from your sitemap after following the above-mentioned steps then remove the old sitemaps from your GSC and submit only the main sitemap sitemap_index.xml again and wait for Google to crawl again.

    Redirect error

Sorry for the issue you are facing.

Assuming you are using the latest version of all the plugins and the themes (please update if not yet), it could be a conflict with one of the plugins or the theme you are using.

To determine that, please follow this troubleshooting guide:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/

Please let us know if you find the culprit.

Only the site admin would know and your users won’t be affected by this troubleshooting.

    Submitted URL not found (404)

I have checked your sitemap and it is loading fine. However, when I checked your robots.txt file, I saw that you’re displaying 2 versions of your sitemap: https://prodator.co.uk/sitemap.xml and https://prodator.co.uk/news-sitemap.xml

Have a look at the below screenshot –

    Robots.txt

We always recommend our default robots.txt for the websites which looks like this:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-admin/
    Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
    Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml

So, you should only keep the main sitemap sitemap_index.xml in your robots.txt file.

Here’s a knowledge base guide on how to edit the robots.txt file – https://rankmath.com/kb/how-to-edit-robots-txt-with-rank-math/

Once you have edited the robots.txt file, please remove all the sitemaps from the Google Search Console and only submit the main sitemap sitemap_index.xml in the console.

    This should fix the issue.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    Hello Kamlesh,

    Thank you for your response.

1.) I’ve done what you suggested but the validation is still pending so I assume I need to wait a while to see any changes.

2.) I’m using WP Rocket so I followed the information within the provided link. Can I please ask you about the text I was supposed to add to the WP rocket? I am meant to add this code:

    /(.*)sitemap(.*).xml
    /(.*)sitemap.xsl

So should I simply copy the code or add the website URL before/instead of the code? Thank you 🙂

I’m also using Cloudflare to speed up the website but I assume I do not have to do anything.

3.) Thank you for your advice. Since I’m not much experienced with this, it’s indeed likely that something may be wrong. I’ve deleted all the indexes and added the only one. I checked the robots.txt file and added the code you provided.

Regarding the troubleshooting, I’m not sure how does it work. When I enable troubleshooting mode, I do not know (and if possible) I can refresh it somehow within the Search Console.

Overall, I see no changes within the Search Console but I think it takes time until it happens.

Many thanks for your help 🙂

    Hello,

    1. Google is showing that error since it has seen the No Index tag. However, as you’ve marked the page No Index intentionally, there’s nothing to be worried about as that error would only result in the page not getting indexed.

    2. You have to add that code as it is without adding the domain name.

As you’re also using Cloudflare, you can follow this guide to exclude sitemaps from there as well: https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/#cloudflare

    3. For the redirect issue, I checked a URL and the amp version is redirecting to the non-amp version of the URL.

I tested the URL with https://httpstatus.io/, and the redirection is created by WordPress itself.

Could you confirm if you’ve used an AMP plugin in the past that you’ve now removed?

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

    Thank you.

    Hi Prabhat,

    1.) Thanks for your explanation.

2.) Yes, thank you. And is it only copy and paste of the code or should I edit the code somehow? (f.e. to insert my website domain name)
Can you please advise me on how to/where to insert the code from the RankMath guide?

    Screenshot: https://snipboard.io/qBmG8P.jpg

3.) Yes, I did. Before using the current plugin I had installed a different one.

    Thank you very much.

    Hello,

    2. You do not need to modify the code. You can simply copy the cache exclusion code from our knowledge base and use it in the page rule. https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/#cloudflare

However, I checked and all the non-preferred variations of your website are redirecting to the preferred variation. In that case, a more easy approach to this can be to use this code in the page rule:

    https://prodator.co.uk/*sitemap*

This would exclude any URL on your website that has the word “sitemap” in it.

    3. In that case, if the old AMP format is redirecting to the Non-AMP version, then that is fine. However, if you wish, you can also redirect that to the new AMP version of the website.

You can use htaccess redirects to create that redirection:
    https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/215747748-How-can-I-redirect-and-rewrite-my-URLs-with-an-htaccess-file-

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you.

    Hello Prabhat,

    Thank you for your response.
1.) I’ve done the following https://snipboard.io/dkv4Ep.jpg, can you please confirm I’ve done the right thing? 🙂

2.) So is it fine if I ignore it? I mean if it does not affect SEO, then I do not mind I was just worried in case it might affect it.

    Thank you very much.

    Hello,

    1. Yes, that is correct.

    2. Since that AMP version URL no longer exists on your website, you can safely ignore the error or redirect to the new AMP version of the URL, as mentioned in my previous reply.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you.

    Hi Prabhat,
