404 Monitor to Catch All page if not matched

    Hello!

    I’m working on a full relaunch of my website. It’a a clean built, but I want to keep some of my top ranked articles.

    I used a comprehensive plugin to export exactly what I wanted, and have imported that into the new site.

    1. I kept the permalink structure from the old site.
    2. I changed, updated, and removed some article categories.
    3. I then wanted to simplify and change the permalink structure in WP

    Before I did this, I installed RankMat to monitor URL changes.

    It seems that when I’m now trying to access the old URL from the old site, it’s redirecting nicely to the new URL structure on the new site.

    But what about articles I didn’t include and should go to a custom 404 page I have set up?

    Doesn’t RankMath have a settting for that under Redirections > Custom Redirection?

    When I turn that on, all the URL rewrites go to this page, even if they exist.

    Hi,

    Yes, that is a native WP function. If you enter an incorrect URL in WP, it will first check for closest match of that URL.

    eg., entering https://rankmath.com/this-is-a-test-post/

    If that post doesn’t exist but a similar URL https://rankmath.com/this-is-a-test/ exists, then WP will automatically redirect to that URL.

    Hey Todd,

    Ah, okay! That makes sense then. I thought this was a function of RankMath.

    Okay, you now know what I’m doing here. Rebuilding my site from scratch and make sure I keep my SEO from Google. Even when I’m changing URL structure.

    Can I rely on this WP re-direct function to point to old URL’s to the new URL? Combined with using RankMath now.

    Or do you suggest doing something else before I switch my site around?

    Hi, John,

    Yes, you can do that. But, do keep an eye on your 404s. If you see 404s, you will have to manually redirect them to the correct URLs.

    Or, you could also this system if you are feeling a bit adventurous 🙂

    Hey Todd,

    Hail to your awesome and quick support on this! I think I got it. For now. And I will keep monitoring the 404’s after I switch the sites around.

    I wouldn’t mind trying your suggestion. But for now I will keep monitoring everyday after the switch to see how it works out.

    If I get back to your suggestion later, I may ask you. Your Regex setup seem to suggest that I will have both sites up. But I won’t. The 2020 sub-domain will take over the www main domain. And the old site will be gone.
