404 log has base URL

I just checked the 404 log, and I see the actual base URL (https://domain.com) in the 404 log with a number of hits. How is this possible? I checked and re-checked, and it’s the correct domain and protocol. The only thing that came to mind, is maybe because it doesn’t have a / at the end? But then it’s not resulting in 404, and it’s not even 301, since it has the correct WWW and HTTPS in place.

Should I just ignore it? Is this an indication that once in a while, the homepage actually gives 404?

  • Hello,

Thanks for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

If you check other 404s on that stats page, you will notice they are all relative (without the domain name).

So, when you see a 404 on your main domain name, that actually means someone or a bot is trying to access your website at https://example.com/https://example.com

You can simply ignore this 404 and go about your day 🙂

There is nothing to be worried about.

Hope that helps. Let us know if you need any further assistance.
