404 in the GSC console

A few days ago, GSC detected erroneous 404 url addresses for about 20 subpages:
    e.g. something like this:
    domain/?page_id=3322
    domain/?page_id=6417
    domain/?page_id=14339

I recently added 1 page which was correctly indexed by Google. I didn’t add anything else, so I was surprised by the information about such a number of 404 pages.

I will add that the 404 error monitor in Rank Match SEO is empty and there are no url entries.
Can rank match not show 404?
What is the easiest way to deal with this problem and what should be done in this case?

    Regards
    Tomek

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the 404 errors in Google Search Console (GSC). It can be concerning to see such errors, especially when you haven’t made significant changes to your site.

Regarding your question, Rank Math should be able to monitor 404 errors, but there are instances where certain URLs may not appear in the 404 error monitor if they haven’t been accessed recently or if they are not being tracked properly.

To address the 404 errors detected by GSC, here are some steps you can take:

    1. Redirect Removed Pages: If the pages with the erroneous URLs were previously valid but have been removed or changed, consider setting up 301 redirects from those old URLs to relevant existing pages on your site. This helps preserve any link equity and improves user experience.

    2. Fix Broken Links: Check for any internal or external links that might be pointing to these non-existent pages and update them accordingly.

    3. Create a Custom 404 Page: If you haven’t already, create a user-friendly custom 404 page that guides visitors to other useful content on your site. This can help retain visitors who might land on a 404 page.

    4. Monitor GSC: Keep an eye on GSC for any updates regarding these 404 errors. Sometimes, they may resolve themselves if the URLs are no longer being requested.

For more detailed guidance on fixing 404 errors, you can refer to our guide on monitoring 404 errors.

    Hello,

If those URLs with parameterized post IDs are going into 404, you should redirect those to their relevant post/page URL to avoid this issue on your site.

You should also use the URL inspection tool of your GSC account to inspect those URLs and check the referring page where they are coming from.

Once you know their referring page, you can remove or update them so Google won’t discover those kinds of URLs.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you for the information.

I checked with inspection tool from GSC and in all 20 addresses are from 1 paqge: domain/ligula-tristique-quis-risus-porta/.
This is a page from a blog which no index parameter. All links from this page probably lead to deleted other posts (currently I do not have a blog on the site but there are a few posts which have the no index parameter).

What do you suggest to do now? Remove physically all pages from the blog(even no index parameter)?
And what about the 404 pages in gsc?

    Regards
    TS

    Hello,

    Thank you for your patience.

If those links are no longer accessible and indeed 404s, then they should be removed from that page so they won’t be crawled by search engines.

That will fix those errors from those kinds of URLs in your GSC.

You can leave the blog posts with the noindex tag in them.

    Looking forward to helping you.

Thank you for your support. I think this will solve the issue 😉
