Regarding your article “Fixing 404 Errors with Rank Math”: I have hundreds of errors on the Rank Math 404 Monitor. Almost every one ends with “.php.” What does this mean and what should I do about it?

  • Hello,

I apologize for the issue you are facing with the 404 errors ending in ".php." When 404 errors end in ".php," it typically indicates that the server is looking for a PHP file that doesn’t exist at the specified URL. This can happen due to various reasons such as incorrect links, deleted pages, or incorrect server configurations.

To address this issue, you can take the following steps:

    1. Check for Incorrect Links: Verify if there are any incorrect links on your website that are leading to URLs ending in ".php." Correcting these links can help resolve the 404 errors.

    2. Redirects: You can set up redirects using Rank Math’s redirection module to redirect visitors from URLs ending in ".php" to the correct URLs on your website. This will help improve user experience and ensure visitors land on the intended pages.

    3. Server Configuration: Ensure that your server is configured correctly to handle PHP files and URLs. If there are any misconfigurations, you may need to work with your hosting provider to resolve them.

If you need further assistance or detailed guidance on how to implement these steps using Rank Math, please let us know, and we will be happy to help.

Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. We are here to assist you further.

    Best regards.

    Thanks for the prompt response!

I recently found 404 listings for the following:

    • site/wp-admin/install.php
    • backup/wp-admin/install.php
    • oldsite/wp-admin/install.php
    • web/wp-admin/install.php
    • cms/wp-admin/install.php

    And more.

    For each, the user-agent was Chrome 39.0.2171.95 | Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_10_1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/39.0.2171.95 Safari/537.36

None of these are actual links that I created.

There are more than 100 .php links listed on my blogs.

    What do they mean?

What should I do with them?

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math support, and we apologise for the inconvenience caused.

If you are seeing random 404s that you are sure are incorrect, it is likely that they are generated by spammers and bots. You can safely ignore them, as they don’t affect your site’s performance or ranking.

However, please note that we only report the 404s. We do not have information on how or why they are generated. You can try to fix these errors by following this guide: https://rankmath.com/kb/fix-404-errors/

To block out access to bots, you can use a service like Cloudflare (https://www.cloudflare.com/). Cloudflare is a web security and performance service that can protect your site from malicious bots and attacks.

Please you can refer to this guide to learn more about the advanced 404 monitors: https://rankmath.com/kb/monitor-404-errors/#how-to-use-404-monitor-information

We hope this helps and please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

    Thank you.
