404 errors – caused by rank math

    Rank Math free

    Hi there,
I’m facing several 404 errors on a site of mine. That only occurs from time to time and seems to affect only the woocommerce-pages. Especially when entering a product category page (frontend). These pages work perfectly and some day… they can not be reached. Not able to find the cause of that error I turned off the rank math plugin and turned it on again. Voilà! It’s working again.
It is good to know, that this makes the website up and running again, but that does not fix the problem. I can not see a circumstance when this is happening. Sometimes it works for weeks sometimes just for days. Our customer is getting mad…
Is there a way to isolate the cause of the problem?
    My configuration:
    rank math 1.0.57.1
    WooCommerce: 4.9.2
    WP: 5.6.1
    Theme: astra pro 3.0.1

I like rank math and wand to use it, but when the plugin is the cause of the error, than I have to look for another solution 🙁
Thanks in advance for helping me out!

  • Hello,

Thank you for keeping in touch with us.

Can you please create a backup of your website and update your Woocommerce plugin and see if it fixes the issue?

If the issue persists, we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-security-audit-log/

We really look forward to helping you.

    Hi Jeremy,
thanks for the answer. I’ve made a backup and updated to the latest version. But I’m not sure if that will help. The problem first appeared end of December / beginning of January and there was at least one update since I can remember. For WooCommerce as well as for rank math.
Sadly I can not say when this error occures. It can be tomorrow or in a few weeks… Is there anything I can do, when it happens again? Like making a log file or something? Because, when the error appears I have to fix it as quick as possible so the customer is ‘happy’. So, if you want to see the error ‘live’ I don’t think that is possible then…

    Hello,

Thank you for the follow-up, and sorry for the delay.

Could you please confirm if you are using Rank Math’s 404 Monitor for checking your website’s 404 logs?

If so, you can get further insight into them by enabling the advanced monitor at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > General Settings > 404 Monitor:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/monitor-404-errors/#advanced-404-monitor

That will give you more information like referrer and user-agent. You can use that information to track down the source or find out if it is just bots generating those errors.

Also, if it’s happening randomly, have you coordinated this issue with your web host and see if they have any specific logs why your website is showing 404?

I hope that helps. Thank you, and looking forward to your update.

    Hi,

the 404 monitor is running and the advanced monitor is enabled. Right now, I only get one error with google as referer. The rest (about 23) are from the website domain.
Strangely the mentioned URL point to files (mainly jgps and some json) that definitely exist. I can see it on the website and via FTP on the server.
(Well, that’s not part of the main issue I started this ticket but it’s still strange…)

I had a look on the live log of the server – especially on the day the issue occured. There is only a error menitoned called ‘client denied by server configuration’ which points to the xmlrpc.php. I don’t think that has anything to do with the main issue. Do you?

Right now the pages of the shop are running as far as I can see. I will have an eye on that an let you know if something happens.

    Hello,

Thank you for the update, and sorry for the delay.

The xmlrpc.php file can be used to enable a brute force attack on your site, so your web host might be denying that file for security purposes, which seems to be not related to your concern.

We are looking forward to your update if the issue happens again.

If you have any other concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime to assist you further with anything else.

    Thank you.

    Hello,
