    Hello,

In the 404 monitoring section, our website URL (https://bonjourladoucefrance.com) appears with 1,500 hits, but when I click on the link, it works correctly.

Could you explain why it appears in the 404 logs? Is this an issue for SEO, and how can I remove it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Best regards,
    Herwig

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the 404 monitoring on your website. When a URL appears in the 404 logs with a significant number of hits, it typically indicates that users have attempted to access a page that is not available or has been moved. However, if the link works correctly when you click on it, there could be a few reasons for this discrepancy:

    1. Typographical Errors: Users may have typed the URL incorrectly, leading to a 404 error.
    2. Broken Links: There might be external sites linking to an incorrect version of your URL.
    3. Caching Issues: Sometimes, caching plugins or server-side caching can cause outdated links to be served.
    4. Redirects: If there are any redirects set up incorrectly, they might lead users to a 404 page instead of the intended content.

    Impact on SEO

Having 404 errors can negatively impact your SEO if they are not addressed, as they can lead to a poor user experience and potentially affect your site’s ranking. It’s essential to monitor these errors and resolve them promptly.

    How to Remove It

To remove the entry from the 404 logs:

    1. Fix the Source: Identify and fix any broken links pointing to the incorrect URL. You can use tools like Google Search Console to find these links.
    2. Clear the Log: Once you have addressed the issue, you can clear the 404 log in Rank Math by going to Rank Math SEO → 404 Monitor and clicking on Clear Log. This will remove all entries from the log.
Click Clear Log to clear 404 Monitor log
    3. Monitor Regularly: Keep an eye on your 404 logs regularly to catch any new issues as they arise.

If you need further assistance or if this issue persists, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from our support team will take over and provide more detailed help.

How to Monitor 404 Errors with Rank Math SEO Plugin

    Hello,

    Thank you for your patience.

please note that we only report 404s, and we do not have information on how or why they are generated.

You can get further insight into them by enabling the advanced monitor at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > General Settings > 404 Monitor:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/monitor-404-errors/#advanced-404-monitor

That will give you more information like referrer and user-agent. You can use that information to track down the source or find out if it is just bots generating those errors.

You can also add them to the exclusion list at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > General Settings > 404 Monitor > Exclude Paths.

    Looking forward to helping you.
