“Save” post/page button disabled for Editor role when RankMath is activated.

I am working on a brand new site.

When I activate RankMath and go to edit a page as Administrator, the “Save” page button at the top right is active and clickable (even though no page changes have been made yet).

When I log out and log in as an Editor and go to edit the same page, the “Save” page button is disabled (as it should be before making changes), but remains disabled even after I click “Edit Snippet” in the Rank Math sidebar and make changes. The save button only becomes enabled/clickable if I click into the block editor and make changes to the page content.

    • There are no other plugins active.
    • There is no firewall set up on the site.
    • There are no Javascript errors in the console.

I strongly believe the save button should work the same as if Rank Math is not installed, but failing this, at a minimum the save button should work the same for Admins and Editors.

As a workaround for this site in the meantime, can you identify the specific user capability (e.g. edit_page, etc) that is causing the save button to behave differently between Editors and Administrators?

I can at least temporarily enable that specific capability for the Editor role so that my Editors can make changes to the page meta descriptions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the "Save" button being disabled for the Editor role when Rank Math is activated. Thank you for providing detailed information about your setup.

The behavior you’re experiencing is likely related to the user capabilities assigned to different roles in Rank Math. The specific capability that affects the ability to save metadata changes in Rank Math is edit_rank_math. This capability allows users to edit Rank Math settings, including the SEO title and meta description.

To enable this capability for the Editor role, you can use the Role Manager feature in Rank Math. Here’s how you can do it:

    1. Go to Rank Math > Role Manager in your WordPress dashboard.
    2. Find the Editor role in the list.
    3. Look for the Rank Math capabilities and enable edit_rank_math.
    4. Save your changes.

Once you have enabled this capability, your Editors should be able to make changes to the page meta descriptions and have the "Save" button become active accordingly.

If you need further assistance or if this does not resolve the issue, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will take over and assist you further.

Thank you for raising this concern!

Actually it appears to be the rank_math_link_builder capability that is making the difference — if this is enabled for the Editor role, the Save button is enabled.

If “Link Builder” is disabled, even if every single other capability is enabled, the Save button remains disabled for the Editor role even after making changes in Rank Math’s on-page sidebar (until/unless changes are also made to content in the block editor).

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Can you please share a screencast with us by using a tool like https://loom.com so that we can check this further for you?

However, please note that the save button is always enabled and clickable in the Gutenberg block editor even with or without the Rank Math plugin.

    Looking forward to helping you.

I can make you a video, but the steps to reproduce are simple:

Reproduce Rank Math changing default page Save button behavior:

    1. Spin up fresh copy of WordPress — any version since at least 5.9.9
    2. Go to Pages > Sample Page > Edit — you will see right away that the “Save” button (or “Update” button in older versions) is DISABLED — this is expected, because you have not made any changes yet.
    3. Install and activate Rank Math plugin from WP plugin directory
    4. Activate Rank Math plugin
    5. Go back to edit page — you will see right away that now the “Save” button is ACTIVE and CLICKABLE on page load, before you have even clicked into the block editor.

Reproduce Editor not being able to save/publish Rank Math “Edit Snippet” edits:

    1. Spin up fresh copy of WordPress — any version since at least 5.9.9
    2. Install and activate Rank Math plugin from WP plugin directory
    3. Go to Users > Add New User; create and log in to new user account with Editor role (not Administrator)
    4. Go back to edit page — you will see right away that now the “Save” button is INACTIVE on page load (where it is ACTIVE if you are an Administrator)
    5. Click Rank Math settings icon
    6. Click Edit snippet
    7. Change text in title or description field and close sidebar
    8. You will see that the Save button is STILL INACTIVE / disabled after making your changes, and you cannot publish the changes unless you first click into the block editor and change content.
    9. Still in Editor user, enable Rank Math “role manager”, and activate “Link Builder” under Editor capabilities. (May need to sign back in as Administrator to do this.)
    10. Go back to edit page as Editor role: now the button is active on load again, just like for administrator.
