New Redirections Not Working and showing 404 Page

    Hello,

I have existing redirections that work perfectly.

Recently I went to add 2 in and they aren’t working – I haven’t done anything different and nothing significant changed by way of plugins etc.

I am not sure how to see the debug results.

It seems weird that old ones are working but new ones aren’t.

    Please help me fix this.
    Thank you.

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the new redirections not working and showing a 404 page. It’s indeed strange that existing redirections are functioning while the new ones are not.

To troubleshoot this, we recommend using Rank Math’s debug feature for redirections. Here’s how you can enable it:

    1. Go to Rank Math SEO → General Settings → Redirections in your WordPress dashboard.
    2. Ensure that the Redirections module is enabled in WordPress Dashboard → Rank Math SEO → Dashboard → Modules.
      Enable Redirections Module
    3. Once enabled, you can open any page that is marked with a redirect status to see the debug interstitial before the redirect occurs.
      Redirection Debugger
    4. The interstitial will provide a link to the exact redirect rule that triggered the redirection, which can help you diagnose and fix the issue.
      Manage This Redirection

If you still encounter issues after enabling the debug feature, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further.

Thank you for raising this concern, and we hope to resolve it quickly for you!

    Hello,

I mentioned that the debug isn’t working, I activated it and clicked to view the page and it doesn’t show what it should show…

    Hello,

Please clear your website’s cache for troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, then we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.

Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.

    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

We really look forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

I had already cleared the cache – didn’t matter. I did a backup.

Please let me know, thank you.

    Hello,

We checked the website and we can see you’ve set a 410 redirection for these pages which are working properly. Please check the screenshot in the sensitive data section for reference.

However, please note that the 410 redirection is used when you want to tell the search engines that the content is deleted. So, even after setting 410 redirections, your pages will still redirect to your 404 page.

Hope that helps and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

Oh I didn’t see that in your redirection documentation that it will show the 404 page. I don’t want it to do that.

I also did try the 310 regular redirect as I don’t want people seeing a 404 page and that didn’t work either.

Did you test the alt redirection code to see if it works to show the homepage vs the 404 page?

    Hello,

A 410 redirect is used to indicate that a page has been permanently removed. Unlike a 301 or 302 redirect, which forwards users to a new location, a 410 tells search engines that the content is gone and should be deindexed. Because of this, users will see a 404 page when they visit the URL. Search engines can read the status code.

If you want your redirection fallback behavior(Redirect to Homepage) to work for those pages, you must disable or delete the redirection rules you created for them.

We hope this helps. Please let us know if you have further questions or concerns.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

We changed the redirection type to 301 for the /product/astrology-empowerment-consultation/ URL and we can see it is working properly without any issues. Please check the screenshot in the sensitive data section for reference.

You can also change this for the other URLs and once done, please clear your website cache and see if that works for you.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.
