Cannot edit Meta description in RankMath snippet editor

    I installed RankMath and imported YoastSEO settings.
    I then ran the SEO Analyzer.

    It shows that the home page meta description is too long. I copied it below but you can see it on the home page by viewing HTML source.

    However when I edit the home page and use the RankMath Snippet editor that meta description does not show – it just shows some default generated snippet text.

    The meta description is clearly coming from somewhere and with YoastSEO it was very easy to edit this.

    All good thanks.
    I realised that the snippet was coming from %excerpt% in the Title&Meta settings.

    I then read up about how to implement my own custom codes and have implemented one based on your informative and helpful articles (and a bit of AI support !). This works just fine.

    One thing – I note the advice is to edit rank_math.php but that does not seem a good idea as it will be overwritten on the next update. I implemented mine in the child theme functions.php file and it works – so is thee any reason not to do that ?

    Hello,

    Please note that Rank Math follows these steps to generate meta descriptions for your posts/pages:

    1. Content from the Rank Math SEO Meta box SEO Description field
    If that is missing, then:
    2. Template From General Settings in WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Posts/Pages.

    Even though the %excerpt% variable was set in the Titles & Meta settings, you should able to change the meta description specifically for your homepage without any filter code: https://rankmath.com/kb/homepage-meta-title-and-description/

    Its all good.
    Perhaps I didnt provide enough information – this is not the Home page, its a custom post type “property”.
    We have users adding properties (this is a property portal) and we also import them automatically – so we have to use custom tags to allow us to generate suitable titles and meta descriptions from the other fields in the property details (like number bedrooms, location etc.)
