Permalink Issue

    Rank Math free

I have used the Rank Math plugin to write my meta data and URL permalinks, however I am now experiencing an issue whereby my permalinks are changing unexpectedly.

What seems to be happening is the data in the SEO tab in Elementor is lagging from page to page, so for example, if I move from the Home page to the About page, the meta data from my Home page is still sitting in the SEO tab when on the About page, and I have to refresh the page in order for the correct About meta data to appear.

If I don’t refresh it will overwrite the permalink to match the previous page and put a ”2” after it, e.g. ”home-2”.

I’ve attached some screenshots to show how the meta data from one page remains when I swap to another page (moving from ‘Progressive Sales’ to ‘Google Shopping Optimisation’ in this instance). Explained below:

Screenshot 1 – Meta data for the ‘Progressive Sales’ page
Screenshot 2 – Meta data remains when I switch to ‘Google Shopping Optimisation’ page
Screenshot 3 – Correct meta data for ‘Google Shopping Optimisation’ page appears after refreshing the page
Screenshots 4 & 5 – If I forget to refresh the page then make some edits, then hit publish, the permalink changes to the previous page with a number added {progressive-sales-2). Although the other data (description, keyword) do revert back to the correct versions.
Screenshot 6 – This is a screenshot of the permalink options in Settings in the WP admin dashboard. I’m wondering if maybe the correct option isn’t ticked?

Can you please advise on how I can resolve this, as it’s really not ideal?

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the permalinks and metadata lagging in Elementor while using the Rank Math plugin. It sounds like a frustrating experience, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

From your description, it seems that the metadata is not updating correctly when switching between pages, which can lead to unintended permalink changes. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Clear Cache: If you are using any caching plugins, try clearing the cache. Sometimes, cached data can cause issues with real-time updates.

    2. Check for Conflicts: Disable other plugins temporarily to see if there is a conflict causing this issue. If the problem resolves after disabling a specific plugin, that plugin may be conflicting with Rank Math or Elementor.

    3. Update Plugins: Ensure that both Rank Math and Elementor are updated to their latest versions. Updates often include bug fixes that could resolve your issue.

    4. Browser Cache: Clear your browser cache or try accessing your site in an incognito window to rule out any browser-related issues.

    5. Elementor Settings: Check the settings in Elementor to ensure everything is configured correctly. Sometimes, settings related to dynamic content can affect how data is displayed.

    6. Permalink Settings: Review your permalink settings in WordPress to ensure they are set up correctly. You can find these settings under Settings > Permalinks in your WordPress dashboard. Make sure the correct structure is selected.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, please reply to this ticket with the screenshots you mentioned, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will take over and assist you further.

Thank you for your patience, and we hope to resolve this issue for you soon!

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that this issue might have caused.

Assuming you are using the latest version of all the plugins and the themes (please update if not yet), it could be caused by a conflict with one of your plugins/theme.

To determine that, please follow this troubleshooting guide:

Here is a video you can follow as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcIWRhcUP2c

Only the site admin would know and your users won’t be affected by this troubleshooting.

Let us know how this goes.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

The 6th recommendation in your initial response –

”Permalink Settings: Review your permalink settings in WordPress to ensure they are set up correctly. You can find these settings under Settings > Permalinks in your WordPress dashboard. Make sure the correct structure is selected.”

    …what is the correct structure?

    Thanks
    Sean

    Hello,

WordPress comes with a default permalink structure that includes ?=123, which includes the post ID to identify the post. However, this structure isn’t helpful in terms of SEO

Search engines tend to favor URLs that are clear, descriptive, and easily understandable, and hyphens contribute to achieving this clarity and readability.

While including the post ID in the permalink structure can have some benefits for indexing, it’s generally recommended to use a more descriptive and user-friendly permalink structure.

Having the post name in the permalink is beneficial for SEO as it helps search engines understand the content of the page better. Including relevant keywords in the URL can positively impact your rankings. However, using only the post ID in the permalink can be less descriptive and may not provide as much SEO value compared to having a combination of post ID and post name.

You can check our guide here for more details:

Hope this helps, and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

Thank you for choosing Rank Math.
