    Hello,

I have got a new project where the following PLugins are in use.
Rank Math, WPML and WP All Import.

I have got a multilingual CSV file which has been imported correctly.

There are two languages (German / French).
The product names are completely identically for both languages.
After import, all looks good, but the domain name has got the following schema:

    German:
    https://mydomain.de/Name_of_the_product

    French:
    https://mydomain.de/fr/Name_of_the_product-2

I can’t rename the product name for the 2nd language because it has got the same name for German and French.

    Now the question to you.
What is the best way to solve this, that there is no negative impact for SEO?
Because the domain name only differs by “-2” which will be automatically generated by WordPress.

Do you recommend only to rename (replace “-2” to “-fr”) the permalink at french, e.g.:

    German:
    https://mydomain.de/Name_of_the_product

    French:
    https://mydomain.de/fr/Name_of_the_product-fr

Or what do you recommend for good SEO at products with identically product names?

    Kind regards,
    Bernhard

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the permalink structure after importing your multilingual CSV file. Thank you for raising this concern.

In your case, since the product names are identical in both languages, it is indeed important to ensure that the permalinks are SEO-friendly and do not create confusion for search engines. Here are a couple of recommendations:

    1. Rename the French Permalink: As you suggested, changing the French permalink from https://rankmath.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/rank-math-seo-interface.jpg tohttps://rankmath.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/rank-math-seo-interface.jpg is a good approach. This way, it clearly indicates that it is the French version of the product and avoids any potential duplicate content issues that could arise from having similar URLs.

    2. Use Hreflang Tags: Ensure that you are using hreflang tags correctly on your pages. This will help search engines understand that these are different language versions of the same content, which can improve your SEO.

    3. Canonical Tags: Make sure that each language version has its own canonical tag pointing to itself. This will help prevent any duplicate content issues.

    4. WPML Settings: Check your WPML settings to ensure that it is configured to handle translations properly, especially regarding slugs and permalinks.

By following these steps, you should be able to maintain good SEO practices while managing identical product names across different languages. If you have further questions or need assistance with specific settings, feel free to reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further.

    Hello,

Thank you for your query and we are so sorry about the trouble this must have caused.

If the recommendations from our Rankbot don’t work for you. We would suggest contacting WPML support.

What happens here is that during the import process, WordPress thought both URLs were using the same permalinks (hence the -2 at the end of the URL path) while disregarding the translated version.

The support from WPML should be able to assist you with this.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Hello,
