Page loading slows down with Rank Math

Using Firefox developer tools, I notice page loading slow with Rank Math.

Rank Math isn’t the only culprit for the slowness, but it’s one of them. I used the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin to deactivate all plugins and did page reloads with the Firefox developer tool on the Network tab.

  • Hello,

I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing slow page loading with Rank Math. If you have identified Rank Math as one of the culprits for the slowness, it’s essential to investigate further to address the issue.

Since you have used the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin to deactivate all plugins and noticed the slow loading persists, it indicates that Rank Math might not be the sole cause of the slowdown.

To delve deeper into this matter, you can consider the following steps:

    1. Performance Testing: Perform a performance test using tools like GTmetrix before and after deactivating Rank Math to compare the loading speed.

    2. Browser Caching: Ensure that browser caching is properly configured on your website to improve loading times.

    3. Server Response Time: Check your server response time to see if there are any delays from the server-side affecting the loading speed.

If after these steps you still experience slow loading with Rank Math, please provide more details or screenshots of the performance tests so we can assist you further. If needed, you can assign this ticket to a human agent for more in-depth support.

Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention.

    Kind regards.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Please get in touch with your hosting provider and ask them to upgrade the PHP values according to the following and see if that works for you:

    PHP Memory Limit: 1024M
    Max input time: 150
    PHP time limit: 120
    PHP max input variables: 1000

If the issue persists, you can install the plugin Query Monitor on your website and look for queries related to Rank Math. This should help us determine what’s causing the issue.

You may take a screenshot of it and share it with us here using this tool.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

We didn’t see any slow queries from the screenshot you shared. Slow queries are usually reported within the Database Queries option in the Query Monitor plugin.

Please increase the following PHP values of your site and see if the speed improves:

    Max input time: 150
    PHP time limit: 120

Hope that helps, and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Hello,

You can use the following plugin which will create indexes in your database to help speed up the queries: https://wordpress.org/plugins/index-wp-mysql-for-speed/

Before using that plugin, we would recommend taking a complete backup of the database so it could easily be restored if anything goes wrong.

Hope this helps solve your issues.

I haven’t solved it. Performance with and without the plugin.

    Hello,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

To investigate this for you please deactivate all your plugins except Rank Math and use a default WordPress theme, then rerun the query tests and send us the screenshots or video, preferably video.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. We are looking forward to hearing back from you.

    Hello,

Looking at the video you are seeing the cache download rate which is not attached directly to our plugin. There are refreshes of the page that load faster with our plugin than without it as can be seen on the video.

You also shared screenshots before where we can see the plugin is enabled on both and the loading time fluctuates between 4 seconds and 1.7 seconds.

You are also, only looking at the HTML generation time and it’s pretty normal to see more HTML being generated with our plugin since we add metadata and Schema markup to pages and that adds a bit more HTML to be processed.

If there were queries slowing down the website you could have seen them in the Query Monitor plugin under the “Slow Queries” section but that doesn’t show anything.

If you want to focus on improving the performance of the website we would suggest starting by removing unnecessary plugins such as the “WP Dark Mode” which overloads the website with JavaScript just for allow changing between dark and light mode.

This is just one example of adding a plugin for a simple functionality that just brings more overhead to the website.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

The tests I showed are with and without your plugin.

    Hello,

The slow query from our plugin is related to the scheduled actions on the website and it might be because we include the ActionScheduler library bundled in the plugin.

You can see that by expanding the query and seeing if it’s calling functions from that library.

Those can be overcome by making sure that you don’t have a lot of pending actions or that the actions that are completed are not in a huge number.

Having said that, those queries will never run on the frontend where it matters the most so if you are looking to improve the speed of the website to comply with the PageSpeed results from Google we recommend that you look elsewhere such as the JavaScript that is being added to the website.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

We don’t perform audits on the website but since you are adamant that this is being caused by our plugin we tested the page you shared in the screenshots using one of Google’s tools to test the speed of the website.

You can see the results here: https://pagespeed.web.dev/analysis/https-giocone-com-game-2-players-drunken-boxing/25xczz48j0?form_factor=mobile

Now, if we analyze the results and look at the areas that need improvement we see things that are in no way related to our plugin.

The first major issue is a layout shift on your website during the page load and since we don’t add any layout-specific markup to the page we can be sure it’s definitely not coming from Rank Math.

Then we go into the resources being loaded into the page and the one taking the ones mentioned on the page that are taking most of the time are the ones from the plugin you are using for dark mode.

Last but not least, the images that are being lazy loaded on your website are taking a long delay to be loaded but the TTFB is very low, and given that our plugin and all other plugins are loaded within that section as they don’t incur in lazy loading mechanisms, it shows as taking only 600ms while the delay from the lazy loading is at 3,950ms.

We can understand the frustration but if you really want to improve the speed of your website you will need to look elsewhere and consult with a specialist in improving page loading speed for WordPress.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.
