Conflicting redirects. Does it have execution priority?

    Hey guys. I searched a lot but I didn’t find a solution.
We have a website with a lot of redirects (due to bad practices in the past).
Today I’m trying to solve redirects using some REGEX rules. However, there are cases where the REGEX rule mistakenly affects EXACT redirects previously created.
In other words, an EXACT rule (older) and a REGEX rule (newer) affect the same URL. In these cases, I need the priority to be EXACT.

    How can I do this?
Thank you very much for the clarification.

  • Hello,

I understand the issue you are facing with conflicting redirects and the need to prioritize exact redirects over regex redirects. In Rank Math, when you have both an exact redirect rule and a regex redirect rule that affect the same URL, the exact redirect rule will take priority over the regex redirect rule.

This means that if there is a conflict between an older exact redirect rule and a newer regex redirect rule for the same URL, the exact redirect will be executed first, ensuring that your specific redirection requirements are met.

If you encounter any issues or need further assistance with managing conflicting redirects in Rank Math, please feel free to provide more details or examples, and we will be happy to assist you further.

Thank you for reaching out with your concern.

Thank you for your quick response!

That “exact” redirection takes priority is perfect.

And in the case of redirection to the “contains” type, what is the priority? Because I did a test but REGEX dominated priority.

Here again. I’m doing tests. What you say is not being fulfilled here.

In the tests I’m doing, the last rule I edit and save is the one that prevails. Regardless of whether it is Regex, exact or contains.

Both rules are activated at this moment. You can test by entering the old url to check that the Regex rule is prevailing.

    Any idea?

    Hello,

Thank you for your query and we are so sorry about the trouble this must have caused.

Unfortunately, our Redirection doesn’t have a priority selection for conflicting redirection rules.

Regex will always be prioritized in this case since the order of redirection type execution is hard-coded in our plugin.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any other questions.
