Question about SEO/Permalinks/best Practices

    Rank Math free

I use RankMath on all of my sites and love it. But I have a couple questions.

As far as permalinks are involved, I’ve always used %postname. But with the ecommerce site that I manage, I am seeing that the owner of the site names his products VERY long names and it is giving me an issue when I am using RankMath because it says the URL is too long.

    Here is an example:

    https://flopshotgolfapparel.com/flop-shot-golf-apparel-adjustable-trucker-rope-golf-hat-fsg2373/

I was going to start having him name them something like:

    https://flopshotgolfapparel.com/adjustable-trucker-rope-golf-hat-73

I put the 73 in there so we have a lower chance of getting duplicate content from having the same urls for more than one hat.

I have stripped the categories, etc with rank math and that made them a tad smaller. But I need to know what the expert at Rank Math suggest? What do I name the urls to make them short enough to make RankMath happy? And if I start changing urls now, do I need to create redirects for each one? ( if so please give me a video on that) I need your guidance on the best way to make these urls short and still not have Rank Math tell me that the focus keyword isn’t in the url or something like that.

    I sure appreciate you time
    Eddie Jack

  • Hello,

I’m sorry to hear about the issues you’re facing with the URL length and Rank Math. It’s great to hear that you’re using Rank Math for your SEO needs.

When it comes to long URLs, Rank Math recommends keeping the URL length under 75 characters. Based on the example you’ve provided, the proposed URL structure seems like a good approach to keep the URLs shorter and more precise.

To ensure that you don’t face any issues with duplicate content, adding a unique identifier like the product number (e.g., 73) is a good practice. This will help differentiate similar products and avoid any potential SEO issues.

As for creating redirects, Rank Math makes it easy to set up redirections. You can find detailed instructions on how to set up redirections in our knowledge base article here.

If you have any further questions or need additional guidance, please feel free to ask. We’re here to help!

    Best regards.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math support.

If the URLs are already indexed and ranking well in the SERPs, then it isn’t recommended to change them as it will cause a drop in rankings and traffic, and even with the proper redirects, it can take some time to gain back the positions in the SERPs.

Also, the URL length is only a suggestion; you don’t have to follow it religiously. If using long URLs is necessary to keep them unique and include the focus keywords, then you can ignore the length suggested by our plugin.

If you want to change the URLs, then you should make sure that they mention the product name clearly and are unique for each product. You can include the product color or type with the name.

You should also enable the Auto Post Redirect option in WP Dashboard > Rank Math SEO > General Settings > Redirections to create the redirects automatically when you change the URLs.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.
