The separator character is used in instances where you have added %sep% in your meta. In the case of the article you have shared, you have only added the title of the page. The addition of your sitename is by Google’s choice of whih=ch they have added the separator of their choice.
To change this you can modify your title settings to %title %sep% %sitename%
