I have a basic question: I changed URL 1 to URL 2 by selecting a different Category and hitting Update (my permalink structure is setup to show category).
I notice that when I access URL 1, it automatically redirects to URL 2, and there is no 404 error.
Is this a built-in function in WordPress/RankMath?
I wish to change the category for many posts on my website (this would alter the URL structure of many posts), so can I simply change the selected category for each post in my back-end and it would automatically redirect when Google/users access the former URL? Would it have any negative effect on the site’s SEO?
I’m aware of the ‘Redirections’ feature on the Rankmath plugin, but the method I’ve explained above (if you approve) would make the process much easier for me.

When it comes to changing the category of a post in WordPress, it does not automatically redirect the old URL to the new one. The automatic redirection feature in WordPress is limited to changing the slug of a post, not the category.
However, Rank Math’s Auto Post Redirect feature can help you automatically redirect your posts when you change the category. To enable this feature, you need to activate the Redirections module in Rank Math. Once activated, you can navigate to WordPress Dashboard → Rank Math SEO → General Settings → Redirections → Auto Post Redirect and enable the option.
By enabling this option, Rank Math will automatically redirect the old URL to the new one when you change the category of a post. This ensures that your visitors and search engines are directed to the correct page.
Please note that these redirects are always of type 301 Permanent Redirection, which is the recommended type for SEO purposes.
Changing the category of your posts and using Rank Math’s Auto Post Redirect feature should not have any negative effects on your site’s SEO. In fact, it can help maintain your search engine rankings and ensure a smooth user experience.
