Hi, in the last few weeks I have discovered more and more articles that dropped in ranking overnight. I can’t find a reason therefore. The articles contain evergreen content, I check the articles once a year and clean up links or add / delete information if needed. After that work I republish the article so that also the date changes. What I’m doing wrong?

Hello,
Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.
On March 15th, Google released its algorithm update which caused many ups and down in the traffic and crawls. In the SEO community people have a different take on this update but many had seen spikes in their search console. Also, Google came with another update on 1st and 2nd May, you can read more about it here: https://rankmath.com/google-update/unconfirmed-algorithm-update-may-2023/
According to Google “The changes are about improving how our systems assess content overall. These changes may cause some pages that were previously under-rewarded to do better in search results.” You can read more about it here: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-rolls-out-march-2023-core-algorithm-update/482389/
Also, there could be other reasons for this, such as a lack of relevant content, low-quality backlinks, poor website design, or strong competition. We suggest conducting a thorough audit of your website to identify any areas that may need improvement:
https://rankmath.com/kb/seo-analysis/You can start by analyzing your website’s content and ensuring that it is relevant, high-quality, and optimized with the right keywords. You should also focus on building high-quality backlinks from reputable websites in your niche. Additionally, make sure your website is mobile-friendly and has a fast loading time to improve user experience.
Another important factor is the level of competition for the keywords you are targeting. If there are many established companies in your niche with a strong online presence, it may take longer to rank higher in search engine results.

Hi, thank you very much for your reply. I have a really fast website Pagespeed (96-98 Pagespeed Insights) and it is mobile friendly. All the affected posts had a really good ranking before and the ranking dropped before the mentioned updates were rolled out.
Does it have a negative impact on the ranking, if there were made just a few changes before the blogpost was republished again?
Greetings Kathrin
Hello,
Thanks for getting back to us. It’s great that you have a fast and mobile-friendly website. That’s definitely a plus for SEO.
However, having a good website speed and design is not enough to guarantee high rankings. There are many other factors that affect how Google ranks your posts, such as content quality, relevance, keywords, backlinks, competition, algorithm updates, etc.
You mentioned that your posts dropped in ranking before the updates were rolled out. That means there might be some other issues with your content that caused the decline. Maybe your content is outdated, thin, or not optimized for the right keywords. Maybe you have lost some backlinks or gained some bad ones. Maybe your competitors have improved their content and outranked you. There are really many reasons that might be causing you to loos ranking
To find out what’s going on, you need to do a thorough audit of your posts and see what can be improved. You can use our SEO Analysis tool to check for any technical or on-page errors: https://rankmath.com/kb/seo-analysis/
As for your question about republishing your posts, it depends on how you do it. If you republish your posts without changing the URL or the content, it won’t have any negative impact on your ranking. In fact, it might even help you get more attention from Google as it sees that your content is fresh and updated.
However, if you change the URL or the content significantly, it might affect your ranking in different ways. Changing the URL might cause you to lose some backlinks or traffic if you don’t set up proper redirects. Changing the content might cause you to lose some relevance or keywords if you don’t optimize it well.
The best way to republish your posts is to update them with new and relevant information, optimize them for the right keywords, and keep the same URL. This way, you can keep your existing backlinks and rankings, and also improve your chances of ranking higher for new keywords.

We hope this helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.
