Breadcrumbs Issue with Subcategories (Taxonomy)

My question is the following. I have enabled breadcrumbs with Rank Math and everything seems to work.

However, I do have a lot of posts which are nested and organized into subcategories.

For example, my Comma Rules articles, they are in English —> Grammar —> Comma Rules

Where Grammar and Comma Rules are Sub-Categories of the Primary Category “English.”

Now, I found that if the Primary Category is set to English, then the breadcrumb will only show “English” in the breadcrumb.

But what I obviously want is for the breadcrumb to show: English | Grammar | Comma Rules | Post Name

I have found that I can achieve this by setting the Primary Category to the Subcategory “Comma Rules” instead.

Is this the solution for this problem or does this actually hurt SEO if I set the Primary Category to the subcategory “Comma Rules”?

That’s the only way I see I can solve this issue.

    Kind regards,

    Marcel

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math support.

Yes, you are correct. To show the hierarchy of the categories in your breadcrumbs, you may need to select the lowest category to be the primary taxonomy. In your case, it should be “Comma Rules”

Here’s a link for more information:

Also, please note that option will not create a problem since it is used primarily for the breadcrumbs of Rank Math to show the category of your post type.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
