Analytics Showing Visits for Non-existent Page with Repeated Domain Name

    Hello everyone,

I’m experiencing an unusual situation with Google Analytics, and I’m hoping someone can shed some light on what might be going on.

Recently, I made several changes to my website’s Rank Math settings. After the changes, I noticed that Google Analytics started showing analytics results for a page on my website that doesn’t exist. The most notable thing about this URL is that it contains a repetition of the main domain name (the URL structure is https://domain.com/domain.com).

Whenever I try to access it, I get a 404 error, however, when I look at the Google Analytics report, it shows that this page has received a significant number of visits, which is perplexing to me.

I suspect that the changes I made on Rank Math might have something to do with this issue, but I haven’t been able to confirm that.

Has anyone else experienced a similar situation, and if so, how did you solve it? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

    H2R

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math for help with for help with the error 404 on the folder with your domain as its name.

The error 404 is usually caused by crawlers trying trying to access the page on your website. You can safely ignore such errors as Rank Math does not have control over them and they do not cause any harm.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have questions.

    Hi Nigel,

Thank you for your prompt response.

I may have been unclear in my previous message, as the question was not related to a 404 error itself, so I’ll try to rephrase it.

Recently, I made some changes to my Rank Math settings, following one of your online tutorials.

Let’s say my website domain name is mydomain.com. Since I changed my Rank Math settings, Google Analytics shows a new page with a URL that is a repetition of the domain name (https://mydomain.com/mydomain.com).

This page (https://mydomain.com/mydomain.com) did not exist before, and even now, if I try to reach it, it leads to a 404 error, but analytics show visits and visit related stats about it. The 404 error itself is not the issue, but the fact that Google Analytics shows this page after a change of settings.

I am not trying to blame Rank Math, nor am I asking you to fix my Google Analytics. I just wanted to know if anyone has seen this situation before and if it could be caused by incorrect Rank Math settings.

    Hello,

Please head over to WordPress dashboard > Tools > Scheduled Actions > Pending.

or you can try visiting the following URL:

    https://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/tools.php?page=action-scheduler&status=pending

Run the rank_math/analytics/data_fetch scheduled action and wait for the data fetch to complete.

This is how it should look like:

After that, please allow Rank Math a while to fetch data from Google Analytics and you should be able to see the updated data on Rank Math Analytics dashboard.

Let us know if the issue persists. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Hello Sakib,

    Thank you for the guidance.

There are no items found when searching results for “rank_math/analytics/data_fetch” in the Scheduled Actions (reached via https://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/tools.php?page=action-scheduler&status=pending), neither in pending, failed or complete.

    Hello,

We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.

Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

Thank you for offering to help, but since the website is an active ecommerce site, I won’t share the login credentials for security reasons which goes beyond possible settings changes.

I will continue to monitor the situation and if any SEO-related issues arise, I will consider doing a full uninstall and reinstall of the plugin.

    Hopefully it won’t be needed.

Thanks again for trying to help.
