Google Analytics (UA and G4) Not Tracking Clicks

    Hello,

I recently switched from SEOPress to RankMath and am not able to track clicks in Google Analytics anymore. I can’t figure out what the problem is. I have both UA and G4 properties and tried installing each separately to see if one was the problem but I don’t see click data in either one. I also tried using RankMath to install the GA code as well as manually installing the GA code in the header (and making sure the RankMath install was turned off), but neither made a difference.

Can someone help me figure out why I’m unable to track clicks in GA anymore?

    Thank you,
    Emily

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Please follow the steps below to create a troubleshooting log so that we can check the issue further.

    1. At first add the following filter to your website:

    add_filter( 'rank_math/analytics/log_response', '__return_true' );

Here is a guide you can follow to add the filter:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/wordpress-hooks-actions-filters/

    2. After adding the filter, please run the pending Scheduled Action from your WordPress Dashboard > Tools > Scheduled Actions > Pending:

When some actions have completed running, please check the Analytics log under wp-content/uploads/rank-math and share that with us. You can upload the log file using this tool.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

Thank you for getting back to me. I followed the instructions to add the filter using the Code Snippets plugin and ran the scheduled action. (I actually couldn’t find the pending schedule actions with your instructions, I had to do a Google search to figure out what the direct WP URL was to get to it.)

The filter ran and completed, however, now I can’t find the Analytics log under wp-content/uploads/rank-math. Can you provide the full WP path for me to get the log data?

    Thank you,
    Emily

    Hello,

We just tested the website and currently it’s firing correctly on the following tracking ID: G-H6DCC7Y6PG

We don’t see it firing on any UA property and only on that GA4 property, so please check the data from that property on Google Analytics to get the results of your visitors that are not blocking Analytics access.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

Yes I only have the GA4 property installed using the RankMath install. I know it’s firing, there is view data, but no click data. I didn’t change anything about the set up in GA so why would I not be getting click data now that I’m using the RankMath plugin instead of SEOPress?

    Hello,

Please clarify if you are referring to Search Clicks, these are recorded in Google Search Console. If your site is connected correctly to Google Search Console you can check your clicks by going to your Google Search Console performance report: https://search.google.com/search-console/performance/search-analytics

If you are not seeing data for search clicks in GSC or your Rank Math Analytics stats, please reconnect your Rank Math analytics. To do this, go to Rank Math > General Settings > Analytics and click reconnect at the top right corner.

Give all the permissions requested in the connection wizard and when you are taken back to your website, select the relevant Google Analytics and Google Search Console properties and click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have questions.

Yes, I am referring to search clicks. And I do see clicks recording in Google Search Console. Just not in Google Analytics. I tried reconnecting RankMath analytics a few different times already in the last few days but still do not see clicks tracked. All other events seem to track, so I can’t understand why clicks are not.

    Hello,

Sorry if we misunderstood but do you mean tracking clicks that visitors are making on your website? Rank Math does not track that as it requires the event tracking feature which we do not have.

To track links using Analytics, you can follow this tutorial:
    https://mrs.digital/blog/how-to-track-link-clicks-google-analytics/

Could you please point to the equivalent feature in your previous SEO plugin so we can check?

If we misunderstood and you mean something entirely different, please explain what you are expecting to see so we can help you in a better way.

    Thank you.

Sorry for the confusion, yes I meant tracking outbound clicks from my website, not search clicks. I guess I will have to set up Google Tag Manager if I stay with RankMath since you say event tracking is not one of your features.

For reference, in SEOPress, they have event tracking available as an option in Analytics:

    Hello,

Yes, event tracking is not available in our plugin at the moment. Having said that, if this is something we decide to implement in our plugin in the future, we will be sure to let you know.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need my assistance with anything else.

    Hello,

Since we did not hear back from you for 15 days, we are assuming that you found the solution. We are closing this support ticket.
