fallback behaviour

#497365
  • When I change the setting the fallback behvaiour from 404 to home page in redirection; I see that when I type sitemap url of my website, it redirects to home page rather than showing the rankmath sitemap. Like when I put this url; sitemap.xml on my website url, it redirects to home page.

But when I change fallback behvaiour setting again to 404, it shows the sitemap. It doesn’t redirect to home page.

is there any harm if I change fallback behavaiour to home page and when I type sitemap.xml on the website to check sitemap, it redirects to home page?

when setting is homepage in redirection:
my website url/sitemap.xml……..when I tyep this, it redirects to home page.

when setting is default 404 in redirection:
my website url/sitemap.xml……..when I tyep this, it shows rankmath sitemap as usual.

I want to ask why this happens and is there any harm when setting is homepage in redirection rather than default 404? When setting is homepage, can google bot visit sitemap or not?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

The fallback behavior does not change the sitemap URL or affect the redirections of the sitemap. We’ve tried checking your site connected to your account, but it’s getting a timed-out error.

However, if /sitemap.xml is not redirecting to the default /sitemap_index.xml, you may need to apply this fix on your site:

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.
