Wordfence is blocking the updateMeta route that is used to save the data.
Check the screenshot in the sensitive data section.
As you are not using Wordfence on your website, please get in touch with your web host and ask them why the route is blocked and returning a 403 error.

Hi, this is most interesting. We didn’t have WF installed any longer, but it was before. I re-installed Wordfence, reconfigured the firewall and suddenly, now it’s working. Thanks for your help!
