High 404 Hits – On Previous Theme Links

    Hi Great People,

    While using Rank Math I am facing a very high number of 404 hits on website. When I see the details of these hits, most of these hits are from the previous theme that I had installed on my website. And some hits are on deleted posts (but I never shared those posts on any social media, so there’s no traffic possible on those posts). Also some of the hits are on my website address (this is making me worried).

    Can anyone please guide me on this. Why is this happening? Is it due to crawlers or there’s some other issue with my website?

    And what can I do, so that the links created by the old theme and the deleted posts link don not appear in 404.

    Also if there are very high 404 hits this may result is negative ranking.

    It is likely that most of these hits are coming from the interaction with search engine bots. I can suggest that you head over to Rank Math > Dashboard and enable the redirections module and then you can redirect the links with the most number of hits to the homepage.

    But your plugin was hacked too, it is still having its effects till now?

    Also a large number of 404 will effect my rankings? What should I do about it?

    Hello,

    It is better to avoid 404 errors (and more if it is easy to fix them, like with our Redirections module). It can or maybe not affect your website. For example, if you have 404 errors indexed on Google and users enter there and don’t find any result (since it is a 404 error), you will have a greater bounce rate and Google won’t like it.

    To fix it, you should use the Redirections module, as Michael suggested, it will fix those 404 pages.
