    Hello,
I have a website in 2 languages with WPML.
The main language is English and the secondary French.
The main language pages are in the root directory of the site.
    RankMath generate 2 sitemaps:
    https://www.lyon-beton.com/sitemap_index.xml
    https://www.lyon-beton.com/fr/sitemap_index.xml

In the first sitemap, the links are listed for both languages.
In the second site map /fr/… There are only links in french.

Is that a good SEO practice?
Shouldn’t be only English links in the first sitemap?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

I believe that this is expected behavior since you have WPML installed on the root folder and thus the links will be generated for both languages.

Please note that you will only be required to submit https://www.lyon-beton.com/sitemap_index.xml as the main sitemap on the search console and thus the additional one will not cause any issues.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    Hi Michael,
    Thank you for your answer.
I’ve read somewhere that it is a good practice to have one sitemap per language.
Is it something you’re working on at RankMath?
    Thanks.

    HI there,

    Thanks for the follow up.

Google recommends that if you are using different folders per language you submit just one sitemap. Multilingual plugins will add a hreflang tag to your pages to tell search engines that there are various versions of the page/post.
In the case that you use different domains per language, then submit a sitemap per language. You can ready more about this subject in the following link: https://wpml.org/documentation/plugins-compatibility/using-wordpress-seo-with-wpml/

This will thus be up to the webmaster and the configuration of the site and thus we cannot control this in the plugin.

    I hope this helps.
