I need some help understanding the canonical scheme in Rank math.

Google is picking up (because of the sitemap settings?) that I have a bunch of canonical posts; which is not true. I have not been setting that element and I don’t know where that element would be!

The above is what SEMrush shows as well.

Can you better explain to me why the canonical element is set and what I can do about it? Note that it seems to be set on all 40± of the blog posts.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

Could you please share the affected URLs in the report? I’ve tried checking some of your posts, but their canonical URLs are already self-referencing.

You can also check your Google Search Console account’s coverage section for the reported URLs with canonical issues.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Sure, I’ll do that.

To be clear: The URLs automatically self reference by design? I did not notice that! I wonder why SEMrush reports the canonical links as a warning?

    Hello,

Yes, Rank Math sets a self-referring canonical to all the posts/pages that are set to index.

If your posts/pages are set to noindex, the canonical tag will not be added, and this might be showing up as a warning in the tool.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
