Could you please confirm if you’re using any page builders? If yes, then please let us know the name of the page builder.
As you’ve cleared the internal links data, please update some of the affected posts and see if the link counter shows the correct numbers.
If the issue persists, then assuming you are using the latest version of all the plugins and the themes (please update if not yet), it would seem like a conflict with one of the plugins or the theme you are using.

updating each page in turn seems to update the link information, thanks very much. I guess I’ll have to go through each page / post and update it, right?

Yes, the tests work when you open the post or page and then the JS for calculating the test runs. You will need to open the post, let the tests run, make optimizations based on our recommendations, save the post/page and the score will get propagated to the list view.
We recommend that you start with your most important posts, open them, make changes as per recommendations made by Google, and then hit the update button.
