Struggling to understand how redirects work am i correct that if i create redirects they will not come into play until old website has been brought down by Higham?

Thank you for that information.
The redirects should be created from the source URL or old domain to work.
Meanwhile, the Rank Math Redirection module doesn’t support yet redirecting URLs with query parameters like the source you have shared.
In this case, you may need to use .htaccess redirects or get in touch with your web host to redirect those URLs to your new domain.
