I killed my Category Pages with this setup

The %seo_description% value is generated from the meta description and it is thus not recommended to use it on the same field since it would drain your memory from the infinite loop.

I can recommend that you use the %excerpt% instead and save the %seo_description% variable for other fields such as the rich snippet description.
