sitemaps and Google search console

    Hello,
I’ve used Rank Math previously and submitting site maps to Google Console was very effective and worked every time.

I have a new website now but submitting the sitemap for that website results in Google giving me an HTTP error. The description of the issue discusses ensuring that the sitemap is in the correct location and correctly structured and available to be searched – all of which I am certain RankMath is doing already.

But I wondered if there were any obvious things you may be aware of that may trigger this error?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

I’ve checked your sitemap, and it seems to be working fine. However, your /robots.txt seems to disallow search engines to crawl your site.

We always recommend our default robots.txt for websites. Here’s a link for more information:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/how-to-edit-robots-txt-with-rank-math/

Our default sitemap looks like this:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-admin/
    Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
    Sitemap: yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml

Once done, validate again your sitemap using this tool:
    https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html

    I hope that helps.

    Thank you.

Thank you, Reinelle, I very much appreciate your time and help.

I made changes to my robots.txt file. I have validated the sitemap using the link you provided and confirmed that all appears in order.
It is a bit odd that if I open the robots.txt file on the root directory of the website directly, I can see the updated version, but putting the URL in my browser seems to indicate that no change to the file has occurred.
All the same – I know I’ve made the change and updated and tested successfully.

That all said, Google Search Console still gives me an HTTP connection error – the same one as before.

    Hello,

I checked your sitemap, one version of your sitemap is throwing an error.
    error

Please ensure that only 1 version of the sitemap is working (200 status), and the rest are redirecting to it. You can also use this tool to check. Please follow the steps in this link:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/couldnt-fetch-error-google-search-console/#5-check-for-the-correct-version-of-the-sitemap

Once done, exclude the sitemaps from caching and clear the website and browser cache and check the sitemaps and the robots.txt. Then, resubmit the sitemap_index.xml in the Search Console.

I hope this helps. Looking forward to helping you.
