1,420 available blog posts got 404 error in Search Console

    Rank Math free

    Hi,
I am working on a site with more than 3,000 blog posts and just installed RankMath.
Today I got a coverage error (404) for 1,420 pages – though all urls are working fine. Each post has slug in doublebyte characters, but I believe it is allowed.

I was able to make one of these urls indexed manually, but it’s not realistic to do this for 1,420 pages. How can I fix this?

See video attached and the Search Console report in Sensitive Data area.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for the delay and for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

I’ve tried checking some affected links, but it seems that it is already working fine as you mentioned, and showing on the search results page. Your /robots.txt and sitemap are also fine.

Could you please try removing all your submitted sitemaps and resubmit your main sitemap only /sitemap_index.xml? Once done, give Google some time to recrawl your website.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance with anything else.

Hi Reinelle, thank you for your reply!
With regard to removing the sitemap, I am not sure what the best way is. Is it supposed to be done via Search Console or Rank Math functionality?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

Thank you for keeping in touch with us.

This will be done with your Google Search Console. You may refer to this guide: https://rankmath.com/kb/submit-sitemap-to-google/

Just make sure to remove the sitemap/s first before re-submitting the primary sitemap (sitemap_index.xml).

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

Thanks Jeremy, but what I wanted to ask was about “removing” part.
I see lots of sitemaps are generated via RankMath below,
    https://www.auto-needs.com/sitemap_index.xml
but not sure how to remove these files.
When I logged in via FTP and load the domain root, I couldn’t find any files that seems like sitemap.

Would love to ask for your help.

    Regards,
    Mayumi

    Hello,

You can’t see any physical sitemap files in your root folders because Rank Math generates the sitemap virtually.

We generate a sitemap for each post type and compiled them into one primary sitemap which is https://www.auto-needs.com/sitemap_index.xml.

Once this primary sitemap is submitted in your Google Search Console, Google will then pick all the inner Sitemaps on its own. https://rankmath.com/kb/submit-sitemap-to-google/

Hope this clarifies your doubt. Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Hi Jeremy,
I understand what you mean. So, back to the original question, how can I “remove” the sitemap?
Looking at the guide https://rankmath.com/kb/submit-sitemap-to-google/ but I was only able to find how to “submit”.

    Sorry for being repeatitive.

    Regards,
    Mayumi

    Hello,

Thank you for the update, and sorry for the delay.

To remove the sitemap in your Google Search Console account, click the Sitemaps and under the Submitted Sitemaps, click your sitemap then you will notice this 3 dots button which shows the remove sitemap option
    Remove sitemap

I hope that helps. Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance with anything else.
